I am driving along and the temp goes from normal to past the red mark it tops out instantly. I replaced the sensor with a used one from an old engine that was working when removed and still does the same thing. It is not over heating. Any suggestions ? thanks Jim...

Is this a G4 Civic? On my old 88 Civic, the same thing happened. It went past the red mark. That is a sign of the temp gage gone bad. If your engine is not boiling over like it's overheating, then you got the same problem as I did. The dealer replaced it back then. He informed me (at that time when I called on the side of the road) that I had nothing to worry about because an overheat car will not go past the red mark. It would have boil over before that. So it was safe enough for me to drive and make an appointment later.
