I'm visiting Ft. Lauderdale FL (from NYC) in two weeks. I'm looking for an event so I can see how things are done in the South. I'm assuming there are some (non-SCCA/NASA) local clubs that have events. Can anyone suggest rAce (not rIce) events or race prep shops to visit in the area? Looking forward to autocrossing a stock rental car w/ auto tranny & street tyres!

 

There is no club based in Ft. Lauderdale (no good sites that are cheap enough). One runs south of Miami but is having a hard time getting started this year. One runs in Ft. Myers (2hrs west) but that is the first weekend of every month. One runs in Palm Bay (2hrs north) but they are running the next weekend (27th).

No shops worth mentioning.

There is a good car show every Friday night on University Drive just south of I595, behind the Alehouse and Shells restaurants.

 

Yeah, Tower Shops is good stuff... a lot of WRX owners meet up there, you can usually find info at Southeast Region forum over on Impreza.net

See a lot of everything... imports, domestics, classics, army vehicles, kit cars... a lot of really neat things. I think Speedsource might be somewhere in the area... might know them of ITS RX7 and GT(?) Porsche fame

 

I did forget that there is a 12hr road race in Homestead on Saturday 9:30 - 9:30. I will be crewing for a neon team.

Speedsource is in Pompano, and Champion is in Deerfield off of 95, not sure what there is to see there though, especially on Easter weekend.

 

Check out http://www.cfrsolo2.com for events near orlando. I don't know if there is anything going on during the time that you are coming in, but it is a start.
