Poll: Do you run splash guards?
It's getting near the end of my third swap and I at this point I have enough money put in to this engine that I really car if it gets messed up. For the last two swaps I have always just left ALL splashguards and front fernder lining off but never have driven in the rain. Do you run any splash guards? Please say which ones and why in your post.
I am lowered 3.5 inches, so mine eventually kinda ripped themselves off. I would have taken them off anyway cause they rubbed. Without them there is no rub. I took all my guards off except the 90 degree bent ones that cover the radius rods--those stop most water from getting near your belts/intake. And I also left the intake box in the fender so water cant get up through that hole. Other than those 3 all the fender and front ones are off. Plus your underside stays cleaner like that, when it rains everything gets a wash.
funny you ask because i found the splash guards that attach to the front bumper last night and i slapped them on. Less weight? WTF, their plastic! you gota be kidding me. they weigh 4lbs. all together, IF THAT!
the only purpose they serve is to protect your car from dirt and rocks flying up onto it. I had taken mines off and now after driving around in the rain for a while, theres always a ton of dirt and crap on parts of my engine bay, thats why i decided to throw them back on. After sittin there and cleaning off all the dirt off the top of my valve cover i decided they were worth putting back on.
just ask yourself this question:
do you mind having a dirty engine bay? if no then who cares take them things off
if you do leave em on, they will keep a great deal of salt, dirt, mud and all sorts of crap from building up on the bottom of your block.

Yeah I was totally joking around about the whole less weight thing. When I bought my car it had all the guards except for the driver side fender lining. After taking off the fenders I noticed that side had considerably more build up. The whole thing is it's been abougt 7 months since I originally took them off for my first swap so I can't even remember where most go. I guess I'm going to go with the one that protects the CAI and which ever other ones I can find a place for.
i may be wrong about this but i believe theres 6 trim pieces all together.
2 for the upper piece of each wheel well, then theres 2 that have the radius rods going through them. Then theres the 2 bottom pieces that attach to the front bumper.

which reminds me ...does anyone have a wheel well liner for the front passanger side of a 90 civic hatch? the one that would potect a cai. mine got ripped off. i need one thanks
i used to run the mud gards for a while then took them off when i dropped the car...but since i have put them back on. and with a 1.9 inch drop they are aobut a inch off the ground. deffinatly makes the car look lower then it is

im lowered and i autocross, i still have them on but not for very long cuz everytime i turn i here them scraping across the pavement, any u can jjust see them chunking
leave them on
no need to take them off
they dont weight anything
and they will protect the engine bay from water, dust crap that might make it dirtier and protect from water splash

I'm trying to make an AEM CAI for a 99-00 Civic Si fit my car, an 85 CRX with a B16A. I'm pretty sure the intake is gonna fit, but I have to relocate my battery. Where the new intake is supposed to go, there is nothing there. You can see the ground from above my hood. I'm currently trying to make a splash gaurd out of sheet metal to keep water out of it, I'll let you know how it goes.
i ditched my cuz im all about the wieght loss
accually i just didnt want to put the ******* back on, infact i think i just grabbed onto them and pulled them off cuz they didnt want to come off. makes it easier to pull/drop the engine and work on your car, the tools/nuts/bolts have nothing to get cought on so they fall strait to the ground (or get stuck on the crossmember....unless you got a Z10/jimfab)...

I thought the undertray "splash" guards help direct airflow through the radiator. Otherwise it escapes the path of least resitance, under the radiator. I had big overheating problems with my Mazda, put it back on, whamo, no more overheating.

ef's run cold anyways... the radiator is too efficient.
I've had all of mine off for about a year now, and living in Oregon, my car sees a lot of rain. I think it's better for the fenders because with the guards on, dirt and debris gets trapped behind them. With them off you can wash that area out.
My engine bay seems to stay nice and clean. In fact, the only down side I've seen is that my alternator belt squeaks a little if I run through a big puddle

I took mine off. I have a Mugen kit on and the wheelwell splash guards blew out and rubbed away against my wheels, so I trimmed then off. You could do what i'm doing: A nice skid plate underneath made from aluminium. This will bolt to the underside of the bumper and give it support and shield the engine and CAI from dirt and debris as well. Add a front lip and you have a deflector, so you have just improved the handling of your car by adding downforce to the nose...
