are you supposed to change your head bolts every time you take off the head?
just like the post says.... I am turboing my car (one in sig) and i am putting a new gskt, should i change the bolts? and if i do, should i get better than stock? or will stock be good? tia
since it's off...might as well go with some extra security, especially with boost, with some ARP studs
I have heard that the ARP's actually seat better after they have been torqued and used once, but regardless if you have ARP's you should get more than one use out of them.
You probably should. But many people don't, including most dealers, and seem to have no sealing problems. ARP's are a good choice.

This is true, I used to work at a Ford dealership and we didn't replace the head-bolts when removing heads.

at work we never change the bolts on normal cars. on race cars we usually replace then with ARP head Studs. Yes ther is a difference between bolts and studs. Studs are stronger. some cars come with studs factory most don't

i've never reused OEM headbolts, but i've heard that if the bolts aren't damaged in any way and the motor will only see normal wear and tear, then reusing the original bolts isn't a problem.
i personally use ARP headstuds since they aren't too expensive. they torque better, hold up under heavy abuse and can normally be reused unless damaged.
IMO they are worth the $115, especially for a boosted or N2O injected motor.

i hear w/ the stock head bolts you will most likely blow a head gasket, but w/ the arp head studs you will most likely blow your block since they are so strong.. i duno how accurate the info is tho. this is just in the case where your engine is under so much stress it is actually going to go out.
in the service manual it should give a length of your head bolts or put one against the other to see if some may be streched. if torqued properly they should be good for at least 3 times.
Stock headbolts are good for 3 torques. So 2 more times after you disassemble it the first time since its torqued once from the factory. I would replace them personally, ARP's are pretty cheap and reusable.
