real top speed of the R
How many people here have pushed their R to the actual top speed? For those who have, what was it? I went 140 today but lifted as soon as I got there. How much faster could I have gone?
I was definitely in VTEC (duh), but the car wasn't quite screaming yet...so I was probably at around 7k indicated rpms. Is it possible the R can do 150???
Hey fellas,
We've gone over top speed, but I don't remember off hand what it is for the R. Top speed will either be limited by drag, electronics, or gearing.
If drag, you won't have enough power/torque to spin the top gear any more. A stock GSR is drag limited to around 130 mph on a flat track. An electronics would be my dad's bimmer 540i limited to 155 mph. If you are gearing limited, it means you hit fuel shutoff or the rev limiter in your biggest gear.
A GSR with enough HP could spin 5th gear to stock rev limiter and you would be going approx 162 mph. You just need to figure out what 8400 rpm or whatever ITR fuel shutoff = in 5th gear.
If you are gear limited, you can only go faster if: you rev higher, you change gearing.
As stated many times, a speedo isn't "that" accurate. An "INDICATED" 140 may only be 133.
Finally, many people may spin their 5th gear to redline or near fuel shutoff by making the run downhill. Even a slight grade can make a dramactic difference in top speed. Same with wind, altitude, etc.
Gearing is tighter on ITR, but with higher rev limit, I would guess that ITR theoretical top speed is approx 160?
Anyone have the actual numbers?

The picture is an accurate representation of what's possible in a stock R!
Though it's probably correctable (speedo error as well as tach) to something like 140+ (143) actual.

Hmm...thanks guys. Incidentally, the incline did help (or lack of it). I hit it in 5th gear (VTEC engages at 110) and acceleration was greatly aided by the fact that I was going downhill. About the speedo being off...I didnt know that. I thought it was only the tach?? At this speed, the car was remarkably stable. It felt like my Mustang at 70mph
I guess I am kind of the authority on this. A stock 2001 Type-R will bury the needle past the 150mph mark on level ground. It looks almost exactly like the picture. I was able to reach topspeed in less than 3mi. Once the speedometer past 140mph I had no doubt it was going to break close to 150mph. The true topspeed of an R is 145mph without speedometer error. At this speed the R feels surprisingly stable for such a light vehicle. I don't recommend trying this out to often though.
Damn George - at your age? Just kidding. Where was it? When I'm at school, I'm always looking for highways to go fast in the DC/metro area. As soon as I get back to DC I'm going to all the meets and track days, etc. I'm sure I can find out then.
