Default sorry guys but how reliable is the 93 civic compared to a 97?

The archives are down. I'm looking for a car to drive around 60 miles/day for work. Is the 5th gen less reliable than the 6th gen? I heard the electrical and oil burning problems start at around 150k miles for the 5th gen. Need owner data pls.

Hmm..I would think that both cars are just as reliable, but you do have to consider that a 93 civic is 4 years older then the 97 civic. I have a 93 Civic Si and I have no problems with it whatsoever concerning electrical or oil burning problems. the pervious owner before me never mentioned to me about those problems either. Im sure when you begin to mod your car or such, problems will arise but that comes with the territory of modding cars. But since your only looking for a daily driver, I wouldn't worry too much about a 93 vs a 97. The 97 is newer, so why not go with that?

I have a 5th gen...if you change the oil every 2500 (I do, i'm an overachiever) and take it to the honda dealer every 30,000 miles (or get a list of the things they do every 30k and do it yourself)...the car will last forever...I have had absolutely NO mechanical problems with my car since I got it 2 years ago...my dad drove it 55 miles a day for 7 years...for mechanical problems think the A/C mighta needed a recharge once...thats it...specs are in the sig

I have a 95 5th gen with 192k miles, no electrical problems yet. Might burn 1/4 quart of oil, if that, between oil changes (every 3k miles).

I think most problems like that that pop up are a function of how many miles the car has, to some extent, but also how well the previous owner maintained the car, to a much larger extent.

With poor maintenance, a car with even 60k can be a sad story compared to a well maintained 100k car. Just my $0.02 worth.

if you are not planning on a swap and want a good reliable daily driver then get the 97, it will be built more solid, heat/air work better ect.... but i love the 5th gens
