Default Should I replace tranny?

Alright, I have a 01 ITR with 75,000 miles on it. A couple of months ago I started hearing a chattering from my engine bay. It was loud at idle and and stopped when I pushed in the clutch. Now after I disengaged the clutch the chattering would immediatly come back. Once I pressed the clutch again it would stop BUT after the pedal was fully pressed the sound would slowly come to a stop after a a couple of seconds. As it goes away you could tell the chattering was actually something spinning to a stop. Also when the clutch is engaged as I am stopping at a stop sign or whatever once I stopped you could hear that same spinning sound come to a stop like when I press in the clutch. While I am driving you can hear a winding sound come from the tranny. On the upshift it shifts fine but on a downshift like when stoping as you go into the lower gear the chattering becomes apparent again and you can tell something is sloppy by the feel of the shifter. By that I mean that it feels like somthing in the tranny is grinding when going into gear.

Now that you know the problem let me tell you what the shop said. They said I needed a whole new tranny because the third gear syncro was toast and that the spinning was a shaft in the tranny. They didnt say however if the shaft was broke or loose. I dont know what to do. Should I get it replaced or rebuilt? Do you think the mechanic is right and what do you think the problem could be? I am skeptical because the car still drives but it sounds like complete *** at all times. Keep in mind that it started a couple of months ago and I havent driven it since so I have a feeling that if I had driven it it would have quit on me a long time ago. ALL info is greatly appreciated. Sorry for being so long but I didnt want to leave anything out.

I would definatly get a second opinion on that. Try and find a H-T'r or some other knowledgable honda mechanic that would come to your house and take it apart in your garage. **** man, thats alot of mileage for an 01. Do you have warranty on it still?

The thing is that the car is already apart and they already have the new tranny. I just thought that I would come on here and ask before they put the new tranny in. I can still stop them from putting the new one in tomorrow. I just want to add that I have a friend who works at the shop and all they work on is Honda's so all the mechanics are Honda certified. The owner had a 98 ITR with a JRSC and his did the same thing.

Ask him if it is absolutely necessary and if it is then I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Your probably gonna get raped on labor charges by the garage doing or tranny now though ;|

Yeah I dont mind replacing it since the 3rd gear syncro grinds pretty bad when upshifing above 4500rpm. Plus that it would be a new tranny and considering that I got the car with 47,000 miles on it and it had a aftermarket clutch in it already so I dont know how bad the original owner treated it. Yeah, the cost for a new tranny from Honda (USDM ITR of course) and the install is $2,750.
