Trasmission Gurus please help!
There is a "snap ring" that goes onto the top bearing of the counter shaft that I cannot get back onto 2 of my transmissions. I have tried everything, it is the last thing to put on when putting the case back on. It is part number 12 on the image below with the grey arrow pointing at it. Please help if you know of any tricks to getting this snap ring back on. The 2 trannies I am trying to put back together are both JDM, 97 Type R w/LSD and a 95 B16 tranny from an SIRII.
Thanks,

Yeah, that snap ring is a bitch. When you expanded the snap ring to take off the casing, did you bend it at all? If not, keep the snap ring expanded, put the casing back on and put the tranny back together all bolted up. Turn the tranny upside down and lightly tap the tranny on the ground so the shaft will slide upwards to where the groove lines up with where the snap ring should go. Then carefully turn the tranny over again and bring the ring together. This is how I've done all my trannies, just make sure everything is together (bolt holding reverse rod, etc.). Could be the snap ring is slightly bent. Good luck.
here ya go...

the trick is, when putting it back on, to spread it out enough with snap ring pliers to get it to catch, then use a screwdriver and wedge it against the top nut and pry up a little. you should hear the clip pop into place.
oops, that site is not really complete yet...thought i had the pic posted with the screwdriver wedged....anyway..should work.

In reply to smokey2.0 - I just left them in the gear that they were in when I pulled the case off.
To all - Thanks for all the tips, I will try to try them out tonight, hopefully it will go together so that I can finally drive my car.

yeah once you open the ring before closing the two casings back together bolt all the 12's aroudn the casing you reach in with a falt swerdriver and pry up the 32mm nut and the ring snaps into place ... if oyu forgot to pry opent eh snap ring before tighteing all the 12's that means its fastened stuck, loosen the 12s again and pry it open ... if you put the 14mm idlre bolt on take it back off as well

I turned my Type R tranny upside down and tapped lightly but didn't notice that I was tapping on the side with the hole that you can see the snap ring through. It bent the case where the plug goes in so that the plug wouldn't go back in. I tried to bend it back out and my case cracked. THIS SUCKS!!!! I did the same thing with my B16 Tranny but I put cardboard down on the floor and made sure not to tap it on the side that has that whole and it went back together. The only problem is that the gears are terrible in my B16 Tranny that is why I was going to the Type R tranny. Now i have to find a case for my 97 Type R Tranny. If anybody knows where I can find one please let me know. Also, will a GSR or LS case fit onto my Type R tranny?

Yeah I understand that, now I am just looking for an S80 or Y80 case to go on my ITR tranny.

not to argue my point, but right now my friend has a 2000si gears inside an ls case. the only thing i know you'll have problems with, is in a 96 gsr and a type r tranny(forgot what year) where the differential bearings are tapered instead of the round ones! if anyone can host the picture, i'll email them the picture so you can see what i mean!

216 is a picture of an ls differential on the top, and
a 96 gsr differential at the bottom, and a 01 type r
case!
217 is a picture of the bottom view of an ls
differential on the left, and a 96 gsr differential on
the right!
218 is a picture of the bottom part of the case from a
2000 civic si on top, a 96 ls in the middle, and a 96
gsr on the bottom. note the bearing seat for the
differential, on the gsr case which is different the
the rest!
