Intake and Light bulbs.
Intakes- I was looking at a Weapon R Hyper. Anybody else with better suggestions? I want to keep the car NA and I also don't want it to decrease the performance of the car...the info that I've been reading makes it sound like touch a part could upset the balance of the engineering of the car...
Lightbulbs- I just cleared out my bumper lights and noticed that they aren't too bright. I also wanted to get whiter bulbs for my headlamps. Out of curiousity- anybody have any good brands? And should I also change my high beams? They look pretty bright...
Thanks
J

Please do a search before posting a new topic. I'm not as **** about this as some, so you can bet you'll hear from Boba-Fe....I mean others.
For your bulb question try this thread from Ken (Black R)...

As far as intakes go, I love my AEM. Though it may only give me minimal gains, it "feels" stronger. There was a comparison between the two recently where the AEM outperformed the Icebox. You can do a search to find that thread as I'm too lazy right now
Also, if you ever see the word shitbox, this is Boba-Fett's term for the Icebox

Swerve,
one thing you'll find on this board is that when you ask a question that the established members find too stupid to answer, they won't. So let me be the one to tell you NOT to put a weapon-R intake on your car. I have a friend who has one on his Escort because it was the only thing he could find. Do yourself a favor and get a Comptech Icebox or an AEM Cold-Air intake. But for real...do a search. I asked a lot of questions in my first month or so as an owner too, and I learned to do searches and to observe what the othe people on the board say. The guys in this particular forum are usually the top of the ladder in technical knowledge, so if you see someone dropping a lot of tech talk, pay attention. You won't find Weapon-R anything among these guys. Unfortunately, modding the R takes the best, most expensive parts to make it worth your while. Even popular brands like Neuspeed and DC Sports are scarce (with some exceptions) among ITR owners. The big names are Spoon, JUN, Mugen, Comptech, Toda, and JDM. Try combining any of these names with the part you're looking for, and TYPE IT IN THE SEARCH FUNCTION. And if you're not prepared to spend at least $230 or so for an intake, I suggest leaving your R stock lest you end up degrading it with something from Pep Boys.

While I'm on this rant, PLEASE learn how to drive the car first. If you don't, and overestimate the car's capabilities, it will end up totalled. I am a better driver than the average ricer, but I can say with definite certainty that most of the members of this forum would humble me in an autocross, drag race, or road race in EQUAL CARS. Don't embarass yourself by modding the **** out of your car, then showing up to an autox and posting the slowest time (STD?)
or by running 16's at the local strip. Please appreciate the fine automobile you are driving and learn how to keep yourself out of trouble before you break your bank with mods. Rrrr...that should do it for my rant. If you are a professional race car driver then please disregard my statements.
Ross - who treats even his slow R with reverence and will be attending driving school soon.

About your intake question...Are you going to get the whole Weapon R intake system or just the air filter??? If you just get the air filter...you'll need to do some adjustments...I would not recommend the Weapon R intake/filter because it will be sucking in hot air from the engine bay...Plus..your intake pipe (which is gonna be metal) will also get hot..thus increasing the air temp being sucked in...not good....Your stock intake system is already a cold air intake system...very good...My suggestion: Comptech cold air intake system (without the chrome intake piece), Mugen (cost alot), or just a drop in-filter and cover the filter with your stock box....About lightbulbs...it'll be a waste of money if you change your headlamp bulbs...They WILL blow in the long run
Might even damage your projector lights...But if you must have...go with PIAA...

Lightbulbs---- if you just want to get rid of the stock yellow/dull hue, go with sylvania cool blue bulbs. They won't brake the bank ($15 ea.) and last just as long as stock. The color is very clean but is not the pull me over blue that is so popular these days.
Thanks for the lecture...I'm just curious b/c I was doing a lot of searching on the net and that was a brand that kept popping up. I'm trying to pick up a lot of what is said around here- but as you can see from the lower portion of my sig- I'm a rookie. I'm trying as hard as I can....
Vago...I hope you're not talking about the lightbulbs for the headlamps....If it's for the bumper lenses..it's good...But not good for the headlamps...Come on...15 dollars and last as long as stock???!!!
You got to be kidding.....

yah sorry for the rant. Anyway just stick around for a while and you'll see what products the big dogs have on their cars. The **** that is advertised in magazines is usually not the best stuff (I see a lot of Weapon-R and Tenzo-R and the like in SCC). The AEM Cold Air Intake and the Comptech Icebox are the most popular. On a relatively unmodded car, both work perfectly well. The AEM might give like 1 more peak hp, but the Comptech offers all-around driveability which, I have surmised from your posts, is important to you. Once you start going with big mods, I have heard that the AEM works better. However, for a nice all-around piece, I would suggest the Comptech Icebox with the foam filter. An R on this board got 174hp at the wheels with just that. Stock Rs usually dyno around 160-165. But honestly, wait a while before you go mod-crazy. If you ever decide to autocross you might want to keep the car stock and beat up on the rest of the stock class. And when you are looking for a mod to do, don't search the net...search Honda-Tech!!
Sorry for the rookie hazing.

Just goes to show you don't have to pay outrageous prices just to have whiter and brighter light output.

Remember...you pay for what you get...Those cheap bulbs will burn out soon....Just a matter of time...When it does, let's hope it doesn't ruin your projector lamps....But hey..i might be wrong....Live and learn...
Hey Swerve,
I completely agree with what Ross posted.
But now for the kinder gentler me, I have a Comptech full "icebox" intake, and some other guys in my club have the AEM so. Why don't you save the money for now, and meet up with us in the future and I'm sure we will let you experience them both so you can decide for yourself. If not meet us then you should search for my and our posts on queries and results with our mods. I'd let you drive mine for a foot or two! He He He,,, anyways my buddy Dave wants to drive it too since he has JUST the Comptech filter and wants to compare!
And YES you should drive your R for at least 6 months to a year stock in my opinion to feel it out and get used to it's handeling characteristics. There are guys here on this board and out there in the world that could out-lap or out-drive me and you with a stock R versus our modded ones.
And of course Yes; STICK with the reputable listed companies. Not just cause they are more expensive but, because when you start out with a highly tuned machine, you need to spend a little more to extract the extra ponies and performance.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!
Good luck,
A.
PS driving schoole will go a long way as a listed Mod. Hell I'm 30 years old and I plan on attending a school to learn how to better my skills, "or learn altoghether how to REALLY drive!"

Sylvania is a major lightbulb manufacturer (I'm pretty sure you know that). Those other bulbs you see on eBay are made by some no-name manufacturer. Please do not get Sylvania lightbulbs mixed up with those no-name manufacturers. Getting Sylvania coolblues (which aren't blue at all) is basically just like going out to an auto shop and buying regular "not-so-white" halogen bulbs. The only difference is that you're buying a bulb that's a little whiter than stock.
I haven't heard of ANYBODY burning their Sylvanias out. On the other hand, I've heard of numerous people burning their PIAA's out. True...you get what you pay for...and all you're paying for is the color of the light.
-Dozed - who is thinking about getting PIAA's just to have the neato HID look

Grey & Ross,
Yeah- thanks a lot for the pointers...I'm still trying to feel out my R. And it'll probably be a horrible thing to say- but I'm not just a rookie R owner, but also a rookie manual driver. I'm not planning on any mods within the next year. I just wanted to see what everybody's opinion is on various options so I know what to save for. Plus- I'm about to start work soon- lab tech- and I probably won't have loads of time to post and read...trying to do the research now so I can catch up and not be such a rookie. If anyone has any good tips/sites/places near MD/DC area/rants for me- please email them to me @ mrjerrylee@hotmail.com. thanks again.
J
P.S. oh yeah- I'm in the MD area- Baltimore- if anyone wants to meet up and say hello to my new love.
