how do i know its a b18 head???
hey guys, my buddy just bought a 98 GSR...however, when i popped the hood the engine says b16a2...that obviously isnt the GSR engine...
however, he says that the guy who owned the car before him had it stolen and just put the b16a2 in...
he also says that it has a b18 head on it instead of the b16 head...so my question is, how can we tell if it is the b18head or the b16 head...
and what gains is he getting by having the b18 head over the b16...thanks guys...

is this true about them not being interchangeable??...please let me know ASAP...
is there really no way to put a b18 head onto the b16??...thanks...

one way you can check is by looking at the intake runners. the intake manifold used to mate with the B18c will have 4 pairs of runners (one large, one small for each cylinder). the intake mani used to mate to the B16a will only have 4 runners.
the stamp is probably a better way to check what head you've got. p72=GSR pr3/p73=B16
as for the swapping of the B18c and B16a heads and blocks, its not a problem to do. look at the ITR setup. its just a tuned B18c block with a tuned B16a head.
as for gains of using the B18c head over the B16a head on a B16a block, i don't really see much. maybe the GSR ECU is still being used. if so then the B18c head should be used too since the ECU will be controlling the butterfly TB's for the secondary intakes. otherwise, i'd just stick with the simpler, better flowing B16a head.

who would mate a gsr head to a b16 block?!?! its impossible because a b16 is 1.6 litre and the gsr is a 1.8 litre, the head and block are nto interchangeable

stop giving out wrong info..
ahh firslty what bottle nose said ? IGNORE HIm as if he thinks that a b18 head cant be mated wid a b16 blokc... he should just shut up and stop passing his commetns.. in every post...
secondly the gsr head ofcourse can be put on a b16 block as my rined has done it and anywyas ANY B SERIES HEAD CAN BE SWAPPED ON ANY B SERIES MOTOR.. thats the ground rule... ahh now correct me if i am wrong.. but the itr or the gsr are considerred a better engine than a b16 rt ? so the head of a b18c5 or the b18c1 is thought of being better than the head of a b16a so what people tend to do is slap on a b18c5 or mostly a b18c1 head whihc supposed incerse performance.. i read it somewhere still looking for the website so that i can post the URL shall get back.. but i think it alwso said that there is NO significant change other than reving much hihger.. i think.. aw rite peace l8r guys shall get back wid the webby

one thing better of the b18c1 head is that it will bump up the compression a little bit, usually around .2 points, also the gsr head flows just as well if not better then the b16 head, the cams are a tiny bit more aggressive, but all in all they will work about the same except the 2 stage intake manifold on the gsr head

like in the picture the red circle is the year of the head and the stamp that says p72-1 is the model of the head
p72-1 is 94-95 gsr head
p72-2 is 96-01 gsr head
p73 is type r head
Pr3 is civic si head
hope this helps
and to the noob that says b16 and b18 are not interchangeble. well they are with some minor differences but hey can be swapped that and just to let you know
all b series engines are interchangeble if done right (with the exception of b20)
allthough you can put b18 or b16 head on b20 block
you have too many problem in puttin b20 head on b18 or b16 block

It should tell you what head you have.
