The aftermath of Fast & the Furious
Ok I'm going to get on my soapbox here for a second to ask everyone to say cool over the next couple of months in the wake of what this movie MAY do the import scene. As the purveyors of goodwill and commonsense I ask all of you to make a pledge not to street race this summer. There are going to be a lot of idiots and inexperienced drivers pumped full of testosterone looking for a way to prove themselves. They may provoke you, call you names - but you know what? It's not worth it.
Here in my area there have been numerous deaths (16 I think so far this year) attributed to street racing incidents. One particularly horrible one occurred on the Sea to Sky Highway (a winding 2 laner on the way to Whistler Mountain) that claimed the lives of several people.....over what? Trying to get to their destination the fastest? That's bullshit.
So if you have it in you, try and spread the 'good' word and enthusiasm for the thing we all have in common - which is the love of cars, motorsports and wrenching. Discourage reckless bravado and keep an eye out for danger. As BobaFett says - the life you save may be your own.
peace.

.. i agree.. i deal with it all the time.. just the other day some guy in a mildly modified neon drove by, reved and gave me the finger?!! for what? becuase i wouldnt race him? com'on what a nucklehead, it ruined my wait at the light, but 2 mins later i was over it..
100% agree with you. That movie worries me. I've seen a couple trailers and its pure crap. It appears to make street racing look cool and fun. That is bad news, especially when the younger crowd sees it. I've tried preaching a bit over in the Integra forum, but alot of times all you get is resistance from the rebel types who think proving themselves on the streets is cool. There are just certain people who think it cant happen to them.
Ah well, be safe out there guys and gals!
PS - on my way back from lunch, some squid in a red Maxima tried to race me in my GS-R. I just laughed at him. What a punk.

BTW has anyone seen the dumbass commercial with Vin Diesel saying "for that 1/4 mile nothing else matters blah blah blah" What crap
I have already started hearing BS, I know this movie will misinform a lot of people. I was watching the "making of " special on BET the other day, the people making the movie claimed that Nitrious could triple a car's horsepower, and that racers hit 180 mph on city streets. Dont they know how much hp and what kind of E.T. a car would have to run the 1/4 at 180 mph? Why are they telling people that we are so reckless, these things are impossible and never occur in the type of streetraces they are depicting. I would hate for people to see me and my car and think that I go tearing up and down these potholy roads at such speeds. Also, the phrase "10 second car" is being waay overused, whats with that? They made such a big deal of the movie being authentic to the import "culture" when they dont even know what they are talking about. This is just like the fawking idiot in the 90 civic hatch who told a NYC reporter last fall that he planned to do 140 mph at the streetraces with 3 girls in the car with him. It would be one thing if they said the movie was meant strictly to entertain, and that it exaggerated streetracing in a manner suitable for an action movie, but these claims that the movie depicts what actually goes on in the streets are total BS and give us all a bad name.
id like to be noble and say i dont streetrace but i do. not often, but i do.
i think we'd all agree that its fun, no? sure its not as fun as an autox or a day at the strip, but the feelings of danger and manliness are different than the more legal types of racing.
the act of streetracing has been romanticised in thousands of movies prior to F&F, and the world has yet to end. dont do what the media has done to the video game/television/film industry and suppose that people (yes, even 'ricers') are so easily influenced by what they see in movies.
i feel no sympathy for people who die while streetracing. they took the risk and paid the price. im not saying they deserve it, but im incapable of giving them any sympathy.
what is sad is the effects of streetracing casualties on innocent people. families, friends, (non-involved) bystanders.
verging on being off-topic.......
the laws and behaviors of society as a whole are so protective of the innocent nowdays its ridiculous. i think all of you speed, albeit safely, your breaking a law designed to protect yourself and others. but shouldnt you be the one to decide what to do with your life? it seems as though the world is being set up as a giant cleanroom devoid of danger and risk so that noone has to suffer. think of some of your most memorable and exciting moments, how many of them involved something illegal and/or dangerous?
im not trying to justify streetracing. its wrong, its dangerous (always) and selfish. but id rather redline fifth gear straight into a wall before id live in a world without danger. our bodies, the world, are built for danger. adrenaline is pumped into our bodies as a result of dangerous stimulus. it helps us outrun the homo rapist at 3am downtown, it helps us outsmart our predators on the african plain (haha), and it helps us time the 2-3 shift perfectly while racing (beating) the prelude down the street, launch better at the strip, and turn better at the next auto-x.
i cant think of anything else to say, so ill reply later.

I'm not one to blame society's problems on the movies because the problems are rooted in a more complex place, which is another topic all in itself. For once, I am honestly concerned with what is going to happen in my area after this POS movie comes out. I understand that people will do what they want regardless, but I have a feeling some tough lessons will be dealt out and hopefully learned. It is bad enough now that every kid driving his mom's car wants to race me, but this movie may promote the street racing scene even more.
I had two kids driving a maroon Camry with chrome wheel covers reving at every stoplight two days ago. They were all over my @$$ and finally passed me on a short two land highway. I just looked at the two clowns who were driving pimp mode with the dirtiest look. I hate this BS now. It really pisses me the @#$% off. I don't even want to know what is going to happen when every 16-18 kid sees this movie, let alone every cop in my area pulling me over just for driving a Yellow import. Looks like the CW is getting a whole lot more miles this month.
Before somebody decides that I am not MANLY enough to street race, UNDERSTAND THIS: I busted my *** to pay for my vehicles. I don't streetrace because 1) I know one speeding ticket will make both of these cars unaffordable and 2) I don't want some punk *** 16 year old who just got his license to lose control and total one of my babies and possibly kill me. Just my two cents that I am sure many of you will agree with, but I am sure that there will be some disagreement from a few, which is what the board is for.

I just read Roger Ebert's review. He gave it 3 out of 4 stars. Has anyone seen it yet - or are you postulating that it will suck?
Dr. Doolittle 2 got 3 out of 4 stars also. So i don't know his stand point of movies anymore. Well, I personally like the batch of cool cars that roam around the streets here. But the rides are pimp enough so they don't have to race. Get my drift? Street racing gets old after a while and people grow out of it. On another point i'd like to make, many people are against you guys because the sport is mainly dominated by those young kids that pour millions into the industry every year. Mo' speed, mo' problems.
Kids come up to me and roll down the window and of course challenge me to race, but instead of saying "no thanks" and them thinking i'm a bitch, I just say "race me at the track" which most of them haven't even been up there. Nevertheless, I'm excited for this movie, because i can see a good capability of imports. We can actually show all the haters that are against imports that we are "fast" but hopefully not "furious".
