Brake Question HELP PLEASE?

Before buying a master cylinder and a booster from the scrap yard is there a way to tell if the booster and master cylinder are still good, or is it just a guessing game?

How does your brake pedal feel ? does it feel like a brick ? is it leaking where the master cylinder and booster meet ?
