Axle Removal
Aight, I'm havin trouble gettin my axles removed. Helms has 2 ways to do it, first is to remove the spindle nut etc. I cant get the damn thign off without an impact. So #2 has you remove your radius rod but the 2 bolts are nearly impossible to get to. So is it possible to slightly raise the engine and then remove them? Or am I pretty much stuck with those 2 options? Thanks.
if u have a civic make sure the indent on the axle nut is bent back out then use a big breaker bar to remove the axle nut then unbolt the lower control arm from the spindle and unbolt the lower strut mount and use a drift and a hammer to push the outer cvout of the hub
If that asle nut won't come off try heating it up with a propane torch. Get the nut really hot and then hit it with a socket and breaker bar. I use a breaker bar with a 4 foot length of pipe over the back of it. I get LOTS of leverage and it come right off like butter every time!
To get to those radius arm bolts.. put a jack under the brake rotor and jack it up quite a bit so your whole suspension is raise but your car is still stable on the jackstands. You'll have enough room to fit a ratchet in there and get those radius arm bolts off.
Cool, last q, the axle nut is standard thread right, not reversed? righty tight lefty loose

take lug nuts out
take 32mm out
look behind the disc brake on the bottom i think its a 17 or 19mm
take bolt out
get something like a tuning for put in between the ball joint
hit with a hammer lower control arm should come out from knuckle.
there is a 17/19mm holding on to the suspension take it tout. then take axle out.
i can change axles in about 10-15min I have done them so many times lol.
Make sure you put the lower knuckle bolt back on if not when you drive off the axle will snap in 1/2 happend to me the hardway. hehe.

Cool, but the main thing I need to know is if the hub nut is standard thread, I've also heard it called a spindle nut and have been told some spindle nuts have reverse thread so I certainly dont wanna hit it with an impact or breaker bar going the wrong way, heh, thanks.

lefty losie righty tighty. THat's how it is. 32mm put a flat head screw driver through the disc brake in the middle viewing it from the side to prevent it from spinning.
Here is a tip to getting the lower ball jt out of the lca.
jack up the car and sit it on jackstands
Take off the wheel
pull the cotter pin on the lower ball joint
take off the 17mm castle nut on the lbj
take a floor jack and jack the car up from the bottom of the brake rotor(be careful not to dent or misshapen the metal rotor dust cover
if all susp pieces are still on the car this will separate the lbj and lca
use the ball jt remover and hammer it in
since the jack is pushing up on the balljt and the lca is being pushed down by itself, this usually works. I saw the Bergenholtz bros use this on their crx. Ive used it since and it hasnt let me down. HTH

Some of these suggestions scare me.
To get the axle nuts off, just leave the car sitting on the ground, and use a 32mm socket with a breaker bar. Standard threads on both, lefty loosie.... As for the ball joint, for 10 bucks at autozone or similar, you can get a pitman arm puller that will pop the lower balljoint in like 10 seconds flat. Once the axle nut is loose and you remove it from the hub, use a nice wide bladed screwdriver and pry the inner joint out of the tranny, it should pop out, there's a spring clip that holds it in. Don't pull on the axle to pop that spring loose, or you may find a joint in pieces.

Yeh, drjon told me to do that to get to the radius rod bolts (the one directly under the axle was a bitch, couldnt get a socket on it so I tried using an open end but the pipe I put on the end was hitting the bottom of the tranny so it was popping off before getting the leverage, what a bitch) but after I eventually got it off I went to hitting the ball joint while it was still jacked up and after about 8 whacks it dropped. Cheers to H/T
you guys rule.

to start off... get a breaker bar, a 32mm axle nut socket and a 2 jaw puller
you can even rent the last 2 for free at autozone.
pry out the locking tab on the axlenut w/ a screwdriver
use the breakerbar and loosen the nut
take out the lower strut bolt from the lower arm
then undo the clevis pin from the bottom of the hub.
unscrew the 17mm castlenut
now use the 2 jaw puller and pull the lower arm off the hub
support the axle w/ closehangers to make sure you dont hyperextend the inner joint
pull the hub out and the outer joint should slide out then swing the hub out of the way
you may want to undo the radius arm to allow more motion to get the axleout
then use a pry bar or larger flathead screwdriver and pop the axle out of the tranny
and your done

yeah man, best way to separate honda ball joints for sure. sometimes u gotta beat on the ratchet to get it to pop.
also guys buy a 32mm impact socket and a impact and quit screwing around.
i ALWAYS have trouble getting the lower ball joint loose.
even doing the jack trick, plus using a separator fork, i only get them loose like 50% of the time. when i pull my axles out i do it without undoing the ball joint, i undo the lca on the inside, along with all the other suspension components, and the lca will swing out and the hub will clear the axle splines.

Yeh I've heard of the fork but can you use that and not mess up the boot? It didnt seem to want to separate to get anything wedged in there.

this is exactly what i did... takes no time at all
in all honesty if your gonna be doin this work, just buy a puller, or at least rent one for 15 bucks at autozone then when your done get your money back... simple as that

as long as the axel bolt is off there should be no problem. unless the threads (or grooves)were not matched. The axels have always slid right out for me (and I have changed quite a few owning three older hondas.

The axle nut can be a pain, but you just have to use a breaker and cheater bar.
This is how I remove my axle nut.
I remove the center piece of my rims. Raise the dent on the axle nut.
Put the socket and rachet on the nut. Last, get a big as cheater bar. I mean big. The bigger the better. I used a 10ft fence pole to do it last weekend, and it worked like a charm. Came off like butter. Once it's loose, then I proceed to put my car on jackstands.

Thats exactly what i do, sure it takes about 15 minutes longer but u dont have to touch the lower ball joint and u dont have to risk breaking the boot and or damaging the joint itself.
