Default ATS vs. JDM FD (search is broken!)

How much of an acceleration difference does the ATS make over the JDM? I've read that the JDM is 300 rpm higher than stock, and the ATS is 200 rpm higher than the JDM. Is the 200 rpm diff. really worth the extra $300 or so?

Thanx guys

Jason - who mostly fuggs around on the streets, with occasional trips to drag strip and is going to try solo 2 this year

I just bought the JDM FD - along with a Quaife LSD.

With the ATS you are more likely to have to replace 4th and 5th for highway cruising. It also lowers your potential top speed by quite a bit.

End of fourth is @~108mph at fuel cut

Never been to the end of fifth, there is no need to, and no straights at any of the local tracks that I get higher than 130 on anyways.

Thanx for the info guys,

I think I'm gonna go with the JDM 4.7, b/c:
- Cheaper
- Don't need those extra jdm parts
- Highway driving is a factor to consider
- And ripping it @ 240km/h is just something I can't seem t let go of

odly, I was just think today that I wish my fd ratio was higher.

i have the ats fd in an R tranny.

From what I have read from mike k and others who have had real experience between jdm vs ats fd, the higher the better

i like my ats fd a lot and definetly recomend it

edit: my next set of tires, will probably be 195-50-15 (i have 205-50 now) to get an even lower overall final drive ratio

anyone know how to reach Mike K?

Isn't the ATS really annoying on the highway?

Just fyi on the draggers: ericks racing uses a 4.9 and stock itr 1-5 gears..... I'm sure most of us here aren't making as much power as he is allmotor (10 sec 1/4), so it's definitely not overkill. Many of us are going to be making the cross-country trek to the itr expo with this - so don't give me the hwy cruising bs...

Best bang for the buck mod you can do on your allmotor itr!

I am running a Cusco 5.029 FD, and I pull harder than my buddy with the 4.785 JDM FD. The feeling of torque in the lower gears is incredible I don't know if it is that good for drag racing though, you go through the gears quite quickly.

On track with a long straight, you might be overgeared and your top speed would be too low, but on a slower track with tight turns, it owns

fd drive for draggers is just dependent on their times. a lower fd is usually not always the best for them.

for instance if a drag car is reaching 120mph at the end of the 1/4 then he will want a tranny setup where the 4th gear ends at 120 maybe 100-200 below the redline

if you took that same drag car and put a ats fd or jdm, then the car would need to be shifted from 4-5 to hit 120 then the times would actually be slower even though possibly the car accelerated quicker to 4th.

for ericks racing, I dont know what times and mph #'s he gets, but I assume tha he is just at the end of 5th at the end of the quarter. even if he revs to 10k that will only probably allow him to get to 119-123mph (4th gear) then making him need to shift to 5th gear and obviosly lose time

he is also probably running a smaller drag tire with a way smaller diameter than a 205-50-15 tire.
which would most likely mean he running his tranny all the way to the end of 5th gear

Is 5.029 the actual ratio of the Cusco? Their web site lists it as 5.000 for the EK9/DC2. I assume you need the same JDM parts as the ATS to run this in a USDM tranny?

Wayne, you haved alot more power than him so that is why you also pull much harder! I wonder what a car with similar level power as yours would compare?

.....I misunderstood something in your last post. Are you saying that a stock itr tranny with 4.9 final drive would top out at ~120mph in 5th gear?

I have a 4.9, and hit the rev limiter in 5th gear in my itr (8600 rpm); it was ~145mph.....

sorry, just edited the post. i meant 4th gear not 5th

4th ends at 110~mph @9k on my car with ats fd

never crazy enough to top out 5th

i drove both this weekend....both in hatches.....

first hatch
b16a with ats 4.9 that rev'd to 9200 holy crap....that thing pulled

second
b20/vtec with 4.785 that rev'd to 8000 (a few 8500 pulles) holy crap....that thing pulled...

all depends on your application.....4.9 would have been too much in the b20 hatch....

i would do either or....you won't be disappointed!
