Default Racing Crashes and deaths! roll cage info?

I currently am sitting at work pondering safety in my little pocket rocket. I currently work at a place where everyone is like a big part of a family, we are all really tight knit, what does this have to do with crx's /rollcage and death, well let me explain. This morning one of our employees announced that her son had passed away and that his viewing will be tonight, how did he die?Street racing! A couple of weeks ago i lost one of my very own cousins to speeding, he lost control in his mustang and ran straight into a pole. I do not want to end up in a casket, be it by a drunk driver or by my own stupidity so let me get to the point of safety. As much as i want a b18b turbo setup i think right now my focus is gonna turn towards safety. CRX's are small enough and uprotected as it is so im interested in info on rollcages, i was thinking about going with a 3 point roll cage but that doessnt look like itll protect me from a side collision, i dont want something that is outrageous and will cost me an arm and a leg, i want something basic that will protect me against side impact and most collisions i am not an all out racecar driver so i want something that will look clean, i also wanna get a seat belt harness, can anyone offer me some advice? also what is the usual weight of a rollcage and how will it affect my car? I see tons of guys racing all over the place and i must admit i get the speed bug every once and a while, but we dont think about the consequences. Please think long and hard and only do racing under controlled circumstances and be sure you are safe.

your local hot rod shop should be able to help you out with installing your cage, in my experience prices lean towards $100 per "point" for mild steel expect higher if you want to save some weight and go with chromoly. a good quality custom cage will stiffen your chassis like no strut bar ever could and be of minimal impact on curb weight.

Man, it sucks to hear of more people getting killed for stuff like this... it really needs to be taken to the track! My condolences .

About the rollcage, I hear they usually run about 100 lbs for a fullsize car. The CRX is a little smaller so I'd figure 80-90lbs? I don't know about installation/construction, but I too would love a rollcage just for the safety factor. Matter of fact, that's why I'm not doing anything major to the car (like turbo, engine work) until I invest in safety gear... doing 100mph in an eensy car like this scares me .

Default Rollcages in street cars

Safety is an important factor when driving your Honda but I don't think that rollcages belong in street cars. if you do crash with a NHRA approved 6 point rollcage in your car you run certain risk of causing major head trauma by bashing your head open on it. I want one but it is much safer to trust the honda engineers when they designed the safety of the crx. Any opinions on this?

I too trust the Honda engineers... to some degree. After all, Honda engineers never put my B16A into my CRX (except in Japan, right?). So I'm not technically driving what Honda intended in the first place.

But then, the danger of bashing your head on a rollcage is much less than the dangers of the roof collapsing and scraping said head along asphalt. Plus, for the cage to be legal it has to have a certain thickness & coverage with a heavy foam padding to help protect against bashing your head. Bare tubing is illegal.

i know there is no better protection in a rollover but the padding is only sufficient if you wear a helmet. I autocrossed a 6 pt rollcaged crx and hit my helet a couple of times when i was harnessed in, not to mention what would happen when you get in a collosion. It is extremely hard to flip a honda, especially one thats lowered. This is your brain.

just my $.02

I was actually gonna go with a 6point rollcage, i dont want anthing fancy just something to offer a little more protection in my car. I dont see how i could hit my head on a 6 point rollcage. I too trust honda engineers, for them to drop a b16a in a crx shows they trust the safety of the chassis for high speeds, but the crx is a small car and lightweight any drunk sports utility or truck can flip it over, and have you guys seen how thin the doors are? theres nothing protecting you.

ive been wanting a roll cage but i never thought of the factor of bashing my head. to that guy who didnt see how this could happen the reason is the bar goes along the top of the windows and the windsheild, very easy to hit your head on it. now im starting to think roll bar instead, damn.
