Default Question about which motor to go with

I want to put a different motor in my '92 RS. Currently have b18a. I have a friend who owns a shop with a B20 block that has been bored and will have 12:1 pistons when finished. I would put a vtec head on and skunk cam/gears/intake. I'm a little afraid of the frankenstein though. Hear that they tend to blow head gaskets. I want the torque it would provide but have to have reliability as this is a daily drive.
I could still do the skunk work and maybe typeR overbore pistons. What to do?

Any experience with frankensteins? How reliable are they? The B20 would definitely be different though.

Well if built properly you shouldn't have any reliability problems at all. Just make sure it's built right the first time.

Sorry to burst your bubble tho cause a few freinds of mine have had B20's in their cars for like 1 1/2 years now and there's alot of people with B20's so you wouldn't be original or different.

Yeah, I know it's not new, but around here there aren't many. Mostly B16c's with FI of some sort. At least I don't know of many.

Thanks for the input though.

I've read a lot of other posts since I put this one on (since I can only post 5 times a day as a trial user, I mostly read).....any way, I'm going to go with a B18c. I'm not going to drag race, but I think I will autocross and was told the torque on the B20/vtec would hurt more than help there. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I should be able to get a B18c cheaper than I can build up a crv/vtec too.

On average I would say that a B18C would be cheaper than having a B20/vtec built right.

Yes... but

A B20/vtec built right will do 220 at the wheels. To do that with a B18C will probably end up costing about the same, don't you think?

For sure, if you drop in the B18C with the normal bolt ons you will get a decent HP/Torque package for the $$ spent.

I completly agree with you msilberagel. I was just replying to him asking which would be cheaper to purchace straight out but yes I think it would cost just as much if not more to get a B18C to perform the same as a B20/vtec.

A question about the tranny. I'm pretty sure mine is not hydraulic now. (92 RS non vtec) If I get a B18c with a transmission, it will be hydraulic. Can I convert mine to use it, or is it better to get a different transmission that is compatible with my setup (cable).

I want to get one with lsd. What would be a good transmission to get with lsd and that would fit my application?

Thanks

geting a b20 to 220hp costs ALOT of money. (unless youve got some serious connecitons) For most of us though that will cost over 5000. (with motor, head, tranny. all that good stuff)
