Oil on sparkplugs #2 and #3. is it the sparkplug gasket?
Hi everyone,
I just bought a 95 integra LSS, with 95k miles. The car had the 90k major service (spark plug wires, timing belt, water pump, all accessories belts, valve cover gasket and spark plug gaskets) done recently. I just replaced the cap and rotor, and spark plugs. I noticed spark plug #2 and #3 had some oil on it. it looked fresh, like it was coming from the top and not from the pistons. I went ahead and changed them and after a couple days and I reinspected them again. This time I could tell the oil is coming from the top, because the oil is on the thread of the spark plug where the sparkplug washer is located to about half way down. The rest of the plug where the electrode and insulator is dry. Is this a sign of a bad spark plug gasket? spark plug tube? Any info would be appreciated. BTW I did do a search as well.
Thanks,
Eddy

It's probably a bad seal on the rubber gasket ring thing. Look carefully inside the sparkplug hole just below the valve cover there are black rubber rings.. see if it is pinched or there is oil there.
first check if u had any stud bolts busted.
then check valve cover bolts tq spec cuz if this is too loose it will also leak into the plugs.
if all were tq properly then u need to replace spark plug gasket set(s). u need to change all 4.
hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I checked all the valve cover bolts and they all seemed fine. I did noticed that there is a little oil in the spark plug hole toward the bottom on cylinder number two and three.
Thanks!

Pull the vavle cover off and see if the rubber gaskets to seal the spark plug holes are damaged.

I recently changed all the gaskets on the top end of my engine. I had a very slight oil leak and/or oil burning before then, now my engine's oil consumption/loss is ZERO, and my engine has 133K miles on it, VTEC'd daily.
The plug tube gaskets are only $2-$3 each, just go ahead and change them.

the valve cover gasket and the 4 spark plug gaskets cost less than $20. might as well just change them all at once.

extreme temperature changes will definitely help wear out seals (think of the temperature range from when the engine is cold to normal operating temps).
hey im having the same problem with my teg. can i buy these parts at a pep boys or do i have to go to a acura/honda dealer? how hard is it to replace these parts? thanks for the help
Auto Zone..... $3 for the set of 4. But they had to order them (took 3 days). Although, I'm sure Honda/Acura would too... they never stock anything!!
I have the same problem in the #1 Spark plug tube. I'm replacing my tomorrow.
I'm sure Auto Zone or Pepboys will work just as good as Honda/Acura. I'll let you know next week.

Well Guys, if you need parts on the spot go to Acura of Concord if you are in the bay area. i'm still batting a thousand on getting parts without having to wait. I just bought the gasket kit which includes valve cover gasket @12.10 and the sparkplug gaskets for 3.05 a piece I think, for a total of 26.89 including taxes. I had bought a bunch of other stuff the other day and everything was in stock
Btw, thanks for everyone's advice on my oil leak!

anybody know where i can get a diy on the gasket change?
1990 rs btw

2) remove spark plug wires with their plastic clip holders
3) remove valve cover
4) take out valve cover gasket & 4 sparkplug tube gaskets
5) put in new gaskets
5a) maybe VTEC valve O-ring, too? (well, not on an RS)
6) HondaBond (or some sealant) at the corners where the gasket goes over the cams
7) put all the other stuff back together - don't forget the ground wire
Can't think of many easier DIY jobs, except maybe filling you washer fluid...
Notice how the old gaskets have gotten kind of hard & maybe even shrunk? That's what goes wrong with them... If you'd like to invent some kind of rubber that doesn't do that, & doesn't cost a million$ a pound, we'd all appreciate it.
