annoying sound after mpfi swap ??
when i was done converting my dpfi to mpfi everything went well and the motor runs near perfect, but mostly at idle theres a loud pinging noise that i hear very often! it can't be a nut cuz the only ones i took off are the ones from the manifold and they are all nice and tight. what could it be ? its really annoying
anyone know what i'm talking about ? would spilling coolant on the exhaust pipes or manifold cause this type of noise ? my gf said it sounds like a tin can
yes it only happens at idle. but if i was detonating wouldn't my car run like crap ? but it does run great! and plus i checked the timing and i adjusted it so its on the red mark. it sounds like something is loose and vibrating against a hollow metal like the exhaust pipes .......i dunno.......i need more feedback!
thats the most descriptive as it can get! i can't figure it out ! and i can't even check it out cuz i don't have a garage and plus its snowing when its not supposed to be
oh yeah! and when my car is fast idling, it idles at 2000 ? isn't it supposed to be at 1500 ?

Oh, I figured the annoying sound was gonna be your g/f bitching at you for driving your car around a lot with the new setup. my badd.......

LOL yeah i do feel like driving the car a lot more now and i tend to drive it hard too
but no, my GF bitching is not that annoying sound i hear although thats true in other cases! so what could it be guys ?! dub204 had a similar sound on one of his crx and it was a loose flywheel cover. thing is i didn't touch the tranny! is it possible that it came loose because of a bad install that the previous owner did ? the motor is a low mileage that the guy got from a wrecking yard that he put in.
oh yeah sometime yesterday i was turning and the front right suspension felt loose or something ! i was thinking it might be an axle coming out but i'm not sure......

The fast idle is probably the tps sensor is backwards. Do you switch the wiring? The DX is wired differently and does not throw a CEL.

no its not the TPS cuz when i tried my friends Si TB it fast idled perfect at 1500 so i guess its something to do with the Si TB i got from the yard. it works and all but how do i adjust the fast idle ?
and AGAIN! what the hell is this noise that i keep hearing ? it doesn't do it everytime i'm at idle it just comes and goes when i'm at idle....

k i tried listening to where the sound is coming from and its loudest around the intake manifold area. it seems like its coming from the inside of the manifold ?! does anyone know what could be rattling ?? eacv ? fast idle solenoid ? anything ?

It is not the TPS sensor that is bad, it is the wiring to it. On the dx to si conversion the tps sensor wires have to be reversed or your car will idle high.

did you remember to bolt the bracket back on that attaches to the back side of the mani? it might be rattling against it. or maybe there's a loose nut / debris just hanging out in the manifold.
Hmm......i was thinking the bracket that goes under the intake mani too...im just starting mine...doing all wiring right now waiting for my new head gasket set to come in.......hope this isnt a problem i run into
no its not the bracket cuz i took that out along with the dpfi manifold! and the tps wires are fine. like i said i already switched the wires then i tried my friends Si TB and it fast idled at 1500 like its supposed to but then i bought my own Si TB and that one fast idled at 2000.
is it bad for the motor to fast idle other than its recommended rpms ? cuz if its ok for it to fast idle at 2000 then i'll just leave it alone. and it warms up a little faster too.
but i'm gonna have to wait a week until i get my car back cuz its in the shop right now getting bodywork and paint done. can't wait! the only thing i haven't done yet is look from underneath......i've looked over and over again for little things hanging around but i haven't found anything yet. and it sounds like its coming from WITHIN the manifold

I asked someone about that fast idling sensor and they told me i dont even need to worry about hooking it up. the guy i bought it from must have gotten the intake mani from someone else who cut the wires. oh well hope it doesnt make a difference that its not connected
I don't think not having the bracket off will cause it, when you get the car back. Take a long screw driver and hold it at certain points on the manifold and then put your ear up to it, this will help you determine where the sound is coming from. Also if you listen to the eacv, see if thats the noise that your hearing. That should make a noise like something is jumping around inside.

i did a dpfi to mpfi swap on an 88 dx 4d and it was throwing about 4 codes. i coudlnt get it right so i swapped back to dpfi and now its making the same noise inside the intake mannifold that your describing. its def not that stupid bracket that is under that manifold either. also the car has a high idle of about 4grand!
when you swapped back to DPFI did you change all your wiring back too? if you didnt switch your TPS sensors that might be causing it......just a thought
