obviously depends on a lot of things, but the vtec is the 'higher' model. faster, bigger brakes, leather, 7 speaker system, higher price.

Yeah, get the VTEC if you can. I am pretty pleased with my 92 Lude Si 4 Wheel Steering. It has pretty good power. It impressed me along with my friends.
I am getting an H22 swap soon though.

I can't wait to test out the crower cams, p&p head, legend caliper brakes with Axxis Ultimate brake pads, and S03 tires.

Either choice is good. VTEC is nice I am sure but they are kind of hard to come by. VTEC Ludes were made from 93-96.
Good luck. I am SURE you will like it better than a Civic.

for sure get a si, and get the h22 if you dont ever want to swap the motor. you can also tell buy the valver cover or the vin # bb1=h22a1....bb2=h23a1

I think he is saying that if he just wants a fairly fast Prelude...the Si H23 should be plenty...but if he plans on modding/swap...it is best to just get a VTEC Lude NOW!. I think that makes sense.

VTEC Models

93 = Si-VTEC (same as 94-96 but has NO leather, electro-luminescent gauges, no subwoofer.

94-95 VTEC = HAS Leather seats, electro-luminescent gauges, and built in subwoofer.

96 = same as 94-95 but has obd2 chip.

yeah, if it's vtec check for those. for 93 u have to check rear badge, valve cover, and block code h22a1.

so should i just look for a vtec badge on the valve cover and h22a1 on block? is that the easiest? because i wont have tools to open up and look at the ecu..(dont even know how to do that )

::EDIT::
btw..anyone know any good sites that sell cars besides autotrader?

i was looking for a 4th gen lude as well. the vtec's are harder to come by, so if you can't find one, you might want to just settle for the si with h23 and then later do a h22 swap or h23 with h22 head. h23 vtec yO!

Default Re: going to get a 92-96 prelude..which model? (5th Gen)

OK.... I am going ot give some advice.... Fellow Georgian.... I own a 93 si... Wonderful car... wish I had the vtec... If I knew what I know now when I bought the car I would have gotten a 94 or 95 vtec lude... A 96 has OB2 emissions stuff and you dont want to deal with that... Believe me... Lose power too(i know guys, it oversimplified, but it gets the point across)... Preludeonline.com has classifieds sections on it... Thats a good place to look for a lude... Most of them will end up with you running off like a bandit with all the mods done to them, and the low price hike associated with them...
ok... I am oging to list out the positives and negatives between 93 and the 94-5 version of vtec and non-vtec lude....

93 vtec.... Really fast, lightest of all the 4th n 5th gen ludes(4th is 92-96, the body u like..)... MOST included cup holders!Not seen in any other 4th gens(also on the Si! LIKE MINE, only reason ppl envy my car!) The console only runs between the front seats(get one like that if you can, believe me) I HAVE seen a few 93 vtec ludes in the Junkyard w/ leather... I dunno about that though...

93 si...Pretty much the same as the vtec, except no sticker on the back and the engine... Cloth seats...

92 si... good car, not my first choice... still a great lude... 4ws is common on them, and its the coolest thing on the lude if you got it...

94-95 vtec.. Electroluminescent guages.... They look cool because they always light up.. I am puttin em on my 93 si... They are cool.. They disappear(kinda) when the cars off(hide behind tint)... Leather all over.... Slighty different plastic speaker covers.. no biggie... 7th speaker... a 6x9 sub(provides bass, sub is a lil much)... Includes a factory amp!! thats kinda cool... the ebrake is located on drivers side of 5pd(only gay thing on em, IMO)... rear view mirror controls located in center console... prolly some other lil mods I am missing...Not alot...

94-95 si... just like 93 si, except the center console is different.. you kinda need to check em all out... Still good cars... Not much else different than 94-5 vtecs.. NO leather.... still bad ***...

96... OBD2... extra sensors because of emission requirements... computer actually compensates for your aftermarket mods to make them less effective! dont know alot else that would be different... My advice is OBD1 computers though!

LET me note that the vtecs run a little higher and the swap isnt too chepa, but its not too bad either... Depends on availabilty and your budget... Alot of guys I knwo have done the VTEC SWAP and say its well worth it.... So your options are still very wide open...

LAST NOTE>> Do NOT GET a prelude S...These have lil motors and mainly are automatics... They are pretty slow sohc's... NO OFFENSE guys... You wnat a lude, get one with power... The Si runs about 1k more then the S.. Maybe get a S if you are gonna buy the car and do the Vtec swap right away... Sounds liek a way to save money....

Man... I think I have covered alot of the differences and stuff.... Everyone is free to add their opinions and anything I missed... Your local man... My GF goes to POPE... marietta..... If you ever wanna chat or need help chosing one just call or email me.... jtcdudeman@hotmail.com... If you wnat the phone number get on my car clubs site and find my info... same name.. Check the sig... GA's prelude only club.... They can be alot of help... In more ways than you know...! aol im is the same... PM on here if you want... willing to be as helpful as can be... Theres a junkyard up in ackworth I think(check yellowpages)... Its a honda one... Maybe you should cruise by there one day and look at all the wrecked ludes and see the differences in them... Looking helps alot... I got a friend or two in the car club right in your woods... http://www.teaminterlude.com

Definatley the 95 vtec. Thats what Ive got and with only cai headers and exhaust for the most part I was beating any honda on the street. kNow I hhave upgraded to the AEm CAM gears and a new clutch and Flywheel and a new nx wet nitrous kit on the way and I domnt think nay hondas in town will be able to even come close to me and I've spent half the amount on mods than anyone else. I guess its just how much you have on the spot

Something important that no-one else seems to have mentioned. The VTEC has big brakes. The Si has smaller brakes, but at least 4 wheel ABS disk brakes. The S... We wont even talk about how the S stops... Preludes have the stopping power to back up all that go. You should love the feel of the brakes when you get in one... stop on a dime.
