New tires rub steering upright, do I grind?
New Hoosier 20x9.5x13 slicks. Cantilever sidewall.
Mounted on a 13x7. Backspace is 5 inches.
I measured more than a few times, but missed it by that much....
It just barely rubs. Almost not at all. The new pointy things do, and the sidewall does, but barely . BARELY!
It still spins fairly freely, but I can hear it slightly.
I'd rather not run a spacer for obvious reasons...No return on the wheels as they where custom made Diamonds (~$65).
Can the sidewall take a little rubbing?
Should I grind the teeny tiny bit off the upright?
The rears used to rub the trailing arm some, so I may be good.
I was looking for some opinions.

I'd think real hard about running some thin spacers. I have 19mm hub centric spacers on my F Prod car to keep my slicks about 3/8 inch away from my upright at the top. Obviously scrib steer will be effected but you won't have to run as much spacer as I do. The bolt plate on the Diamond wheels should be pretty thin so I'd think you'd still be all right on the stud length.
Two years ago I ran 20x8 all around and they fit with a 5" backspace.
I measured the cantilever sidewall of those and the 20x9.5s. They measured the same mounted, so I don't know what happen. Last year I ran a 4" backspace, which was really the wrong backspace, they stuck out, they scrubbed funny, they really changed the whole front end geometry. So I tried a 5"...
I have the cheap Jeg's 1/4" spacers...I just didn't want to use them.
I probably will. As grinding seems iffy.
Diamonds are lugcentric so that's easy to work with and yes, the
bolt plate is not too thick. Thanks Lee.
Rubber smoker, I bought them from Tom at http://www.Midatlanticmotorsport.com.
Move the decimal point y0!
Math forum?
I wish they offered a 4.75" backspace...****!
Edit: pic is upside down.

20.0 X 8.0-13 section width 9.2"
20.0 X 9.0-13 section width 11.0"

All I can say is you must have measured wrong, not possable for them to be the same width.

The wheel lip to edge of sidewall is the same for the two ~1 3/8 inch.
The wider tire sticks out further from the car, as the backspace is the same.
Grinding the suspension metal doesn't seem like the right thing, but
I was curious if anyone has, and if it causes problems. Thanks again.
Edit: too early to spell.

The only solution is to run spacers, with longer wheel studs if needed. Really won't hurt anything, and you'll get the effective backspace dimension needed.
