Default Talladega Gran Prix..... (6/18/2001) :)

Hi guys, I thought I'd post about yesterday's running.

It was myself, about 5 celica's, 2 2nd gen rx7's, a sentra se-r, and a turbo miata.

We basically had the whole track to ourselves all day long. I ran some 1:17.xx's consistently counter-clockwise. I previously had some times like 1:22.xx running that track clockwise...

Fun was had by all. Long day of running against the celica's. The miata ran a best of 1:16.xx from what we timed, clockwise... But was having overheating problems.

And the SE-R was driving like a madman - 1:17.xx's very consistently - squealing all the way around the track (clockwise)! He used up his tires that day, and was overheating so much he was boiling the water in the coolant reservoir!

I think they're planning on running again soon. I'll post links/ pics if I can find them on the celica boards...

I didn't get video of my best runs because I ran out of tape, but that custom camera mount worked so nice!!! I can't wait until the next auto-x to try it out!

Oh yeah, my car seems to pull slightly to the right now... Any ideas why?

And I didn't notice anything during the runs, but driving home, my brakes feel mushy. I guess I boiled the fluid for the first time.

BTW: Heel toe is easier duckfooted for me (heel on brake, ball of foot on gas...)! Smoother transition, but I prolly lost time because I wasn't concentrating on turning the apex correctly when I was doing the footwork.

Were they allowing you to go all the way around the 2.66 oval?

Err... I think you must be thinking about the talladega speedway... ?

There were a few of those moments you describe, though: several people had off-road adventures without incident besides mud and grass in some exotic places...

What event was there at Talladega? That is a really fun track and even though it seems "simple" it's actually pretty tough to get a good lap going.

In case you happen to be curious as to what a racecar on race tires would run on that track, a GT1 Corvette ran a 62.3 second lap at the solo I a couple of months ago. Our ITA CRX ran in the 68s when we were there in March (and in a friend's Type R I got to drive I turned a 71.1) These were all run in the regular clockwise direction.

Did you guys rent the track? Thanks for any info.

I haven't run the track since it was revamped. Is it longer than before and how do the times compare with the old track. It sounds like the track has slower times so I guess they added some length to it.

Yes they did make it a little longer. For comparison, I used to run my car (Talon awd) on yokos A032Rs on the old track in the 70s and now I'm running in the 74s on street tires on the new repaved track. Give 1-2 secs for the A032Rs and I would guess the track is about 2-3 seconds slower than before. It is however, 10 times more enjoyable now without the worry of cording all your new tires as was the case with the old surface.

Sounds like you guys had fun. Dam Timko was talking about it at the last Solo II on 6/10. Keep us posted for the next one, I'd like to go. Also, you going this weekend to Turner Field? It's Sat and Sunday.....

Talladega Gran Prix is a motorcycle road course that is south of Anniston, AL. It used to be like 1.1 or 1.3 miles long and SCCA held autoxs and Solo Is there. It was recently repaved and the course altered. Before they didn't have car road races there since the track wasn't wide enough, don't know about now with the new configuration.

SMSP- who used to turn 64s or 66s (can't recall) in his 86 Civic at TGP

Boba-Tea: what SMSP said!

So if I convert my times to seconds... 77.xx is ok for a rookie like myself? My first time on a road course!

Anyone run this track recently so I can get an indication?

HRacer, I take it you've run it pretty recently - so I need to drop 3 more seconds, huh? Wow!

Trey, we haven't formally met - but I'm sure we've both seen each other's cars. I dunno if I'll be at the auto-x this weekend... I really want to go, but may have to take a trip out of state...

Low 70s is a respectable time in an Integra. What event was this? I thought the owner decided not to let cars run on the track again. I will have to get the tapes out and see what my times were last time I was there. I was looking forward to the Solo 1 at TGP in Sept .. but it has been canceled.

I was under the same impression! Maybe there will be a solo I after all...

My times were 1:12's-1:13 (This is from a run meaning starting timing at the tower with a lap already complete from the esses).

Good track.

Doesn't look like it. The SEDiv Solo 1 site has been updated with the TGP event showing as canceled. I would like to know for sure what is going on. TGP is a fun little track and is less then a 2 hour drive from me.

I just called the track the owner (David) is out but I spoke to one of the other guys. THey said the "big cars" (Vipers, Corvettes and such) were putting grooves in the track and ruining the surface so no more V8's are allowed.

We are still free to rent the track but this would likely explain the canceled solo I

So then I imagine the calendar for the track to have been freed up a bit. If anybody wants to rent the track, I'm there! (weekends only)
