Default New ITR Owner with many rookie questions

Hi...new ITR owner. Hello everyone.

I'm one of the unique- I bought a Canadian ITR but will driving it in the states..East Coast...info from the dealership is that I have the last 2001 Type R in the Toronto Area..haha lucky me...

soo...

Just started getting to know the vehicle. Actually- I'm getting it in a day. Anyway- I have a few questions that I can't seem to find answers to on the web.

1) How many ITR were imported to the US and Canada for 2001?
2) Are there any differences between the 2001 Canadian and 2001 US besides the CW color?
3) What is the best intake for me to add on? I used to own a 99 Civic...and had a Weapon R on it- but from all the info I've been reading on the research they put in for the Type R- I don't want to put something on that would DECREASE its performance.

Okay- that's about it for now.

Swerve...not b/c I drive poorly- fraternity nickname...

I'm feeling talkative tonight.

I'll let some of the better "experts" answer your questions, but just wanted to say Hi and welcome you to the group. You'll love your R, hopefully as much as I have been enjoying mine since I got it last Nov.

The general consensus in the past has been to leave the car stock for a while so you can get to know it. It doesn't drive much like any other front wheel car you have driven in the past, and if you're not a semi-capable and knowledgable driver, you can really get into trouble with it. The car is designed with neutral handling from the factory. This means that if you drive it like you drove your civic, you may just end up spinning into somthing hard and unyielding. Take any money you're wanting to invest in mods right off the bat, and invest in a driving school, or instructor assisted track event. Better yet, find a local SCCA autcross and take the car there (once you have broken it in of course, no VTEC for 1000 miles please). These are wonderful environments to learn about how to drive the car, with little in the way of consequences if you screw up.

Of course, this is just my humble opinion. You know best how to enjoy your car. Good luck, and have fun!

Intake depends on where you will want to go with the car...if you plan on doing some serious mods, I believe most people agree that the AEM cold air intake will allow for better breathing at high RPMs. However, if you will just be doing bolt on upgrades, the Comptech Icebox should be sufficient and has been proven to perform better than the AEM and Injen long tube intakes in the mid range. Personally, I went for the Icebox and I like it!

1. Who knows how many were imported. Too Many in my opionion in the hands of worthless drivers.
2. The only differences I know of are that you (canadains) get red seats opposed to our black.
3. If you plan on doingANYTHING else to the car in the future such as cams or some other power adder, go with the AEM CAI, the Comptech "shitbox"( for you Ross) is not worth the money. The AEM is a little loud on the VTEC side, but hey you bought a car that doesnt have any sound deadening material in it.

And now I'll add my other .02 little cents. Before you start to modify the car, please get to know it and its capabilities. Too many times have I seen people start modifying the ITR and get less than satisfactory results. So take it from Boba, put 5 to 6 thousand miles on it, get it nice and broke in. And then come back and tell us what your plans are. There are many of us on this board that are here to help. Oh and BTW, welcome to H-T!

Hi Swerve, welcome to honda-tech.com man!

Yeah well I think it really depends on what kinda road condition u have in your area and what kinda driving style u have. If u got some traffic lights, uphill and stuff, I will prefer a better inbox filter(e.g.SPOON/Monster Power Filter). This was my friend's first mod when he got his R. The engine really breath better and he said the low end is just the same, but the car runs a bit better from around 3,500rpm and all the way to the redline.

TypeR are just not the same LOL

If u always take it to the limit, 8000rpm on every gear, then a CAI will be great. But the bad thing is u lose some torque if u use that.

Canadian cars are required by law to have daytime running lights, which aren't on the U.S. cars.

If the ITR is like the NSX, then the speedometer markings are reversed. U.S. cars (ITR and NSX) have the speeds in mph in a big font and the speeds in km per hour in a small font. The Canadian NSX has the reverse, with kmph in the big font; is that how your ITR speedo is, too?

Wow...one day- and so many helpful hints. Anyway...this is a reply to everyone who was kind enough to write me back.

Yeah- besides the speedometer- the other things were new to me. I figured the KPH would be bigger b/c they're metric here. I say they're b/c I'm not Canadian. My parents moved here for business so I'm just along for the ride. The red seats I like very much too and plus I hear there is no CW in the states.

As for all the intake news- I don't think I'll be putting one in for a while. I knew that much at least. I just wanted some "age old" opinion from experienced drivers so I don't end up buying some crappy one in the future.

Thank for the quote on '00 and '01 numbers. In the Canada- they say 200 were imported each year...1500...wow that's a lot more.

YD - I always thought there were 1500 in the states but then there is that guy TypeR1558? unless that's not referring to his car #...

Swerve - how far is your part of MD from DC? I go to GW during the school year, when I get down there I'd like to come check out those red seats.

But there are a lot more people in the States (285 million vs 31 million). If these numbers of R's are correct, there are more R's per capita in Canada than in the United States.

Well, the rumors are that the car # you have doesn't have to match up exactly. I've heard 750 black and 750 yellow in the US. Now is Canada I've heard an additional 350. This is for '00 and I would assume also for '01.

Let's say your R was imported to the US and is #1555. Well, from what I've gathered it doesn't matter what # your R is.

How about you Canadians? Give us your R's limited #? I'm curious if any of them are listed higher than #1850??

I work @ the Johns Hopkins campus. Feel free to email me if you decide to come check 'em out.

as for the numbers- I just wanted to know how many '01 were produced in total. When you say you have #1260-it's out of how many?

Welcome to Honda-Tech. I figured I would weigh in on the how many ITR's question. The answer is that nobody is 100% certain. Also you should never believe what the dealers tell you. They are always saying a lower number since it makes it sound much better. Personally, I think that all the cars follow the same numbering scheme for all of North America. Basically, I have never heard of a person in Canda having the same numbers as someone in the US. If that is true then last year there was somewhere around 1600 brought over to North America (since I haven't really noticed an ITR over 1600 yet). Also, judging by previous meetings and sightings I would say that they made more PY ITR's than Black. Either that or the black ITR owners don't get out much.

I did some checking on the ITRCA registry and these are the higest numbers that peple have registered there by year:

1997: #0479
1998: #2992 (that seems way high...)
1999: #0133
2000: #2000
2001: #1605

Don't know how acurate those are...

I agree with Eric, I don't think that it is seperated between canada and the US i Think the #'s are mixed up between the 2 as in #1 and #890 might be in the Us but # 78 and #1000 might be in canada. So its kind of mixed up. as far as numbers its just guesstimates but i thing for 2000 and 2001 there were about 1800-2000 for each year.

BTW lucky bastard getting a CW ITR into the US did you have any problems importing it?

i took a look at that registry over at ITRCA thinking you had to be right, it must be a Euro model. But the guy is in California and it says it is a US version....hmm, maybe just an error in entry. I thought there were like 1200.

There is a #1977 registered, but that does say it is the Euro model.

Yes, you're correct. Good catch.

More info on the Canadian R at Acura's website: http://english.acuracanada.ca/models...a_features.asp

Yup...no A/C...but that was about $1200 US to add. but even then- I was asking b/c from all the MSRP prices that I've seen people pay- the Canadian model was still a lot cheaper. My last car was a Civic EX and the Canadian model SUCKED...so that's why i worry...

anyone? anything more important than color and A/C?
