Synthetic or regular in tranny?
i have a 93 civic ex with 113,000 miles and i'm thinking about changing the oil in the tranny to synthetic, i been running regular 10w30 in it, do you think it would be worth it or mess anything up or should I leave it the way it is?
of course you can run anything you like in the tranny, even extra virgin olive oil.
motor oil will work but it breaks down easily under the high velocity and sheering forces of the gear teeth.
synthetic will of course last longer.
When I swapped in an ITR lsd into my GSr tranny, I knew I would change the fluid out after the initial 500 miles to look for problems, so in that case I did use 5w30 motor oil. But I wouldnt use it for more than a few thousand miles, and who wants to change their tranny fluid that often?!
So... most of us here that love our cars will use Manual Tranny Fluid aka MTF, and most of us will suggest Honda OEM MTF unless you choose to spend even more money and buy Redline MTF or other aftermarket tranny-specific or limited-slip-differential-specific fluids.

I suggest Genuine Honda MTF. I definately noticed a difference when I changed from 5w-30 Mobil 1 to Honda MTF. I used to have a grind in 3rd and slight grind in 4th with the Mobil 1. After switching the grind in 4th is gone and I only have a slight grind in 3rd (characteristic of 90% of Honda manual transmissions). My friend uses Redline MTF and that works very well, but is also expensive.
thanks for the info, for all you ******* smart *** people, just asked a simple question, the book calls for regular motor oil, yall are just a bunch a JDM wannbes

Hey moron, open up your owners manual, look at the maintenance part, and it'll say use 10-30 or 10-40 for the tranny! Don't say nothing if you don't know NOTHING!
its like when i told someone they needed a new flux capacitor for there car, and NAPA had them on sale for 49.99 and to just ask someone behind the desk about it!
yup...using regular mobile 1 10w-30 till this weekend when i put in my nice little 6 puck, then i'll be using good'ol honda MTF.
