im running d-series bone stock d16y7 with 97k miles. it grinded in 3rd gear whenever i shifted hard on it. i drained it and got honda genuine transmission oil from dealer.. i think it was 5.50/6$ each [even with my commercial discount]. my tranny takes 1.9L i believe so 2 bottles is fine. i drained it, filled it up and grinding is gone and shifts hella smooth. cant go wrong with honda GENUINE OEM. thats why its there. lol

you really shouldn't use gear oil in a honda tranny its to thick and doesn't go where it should or it creates a wedge between gears...they say not to go any higher then 5w-30 motor oil....honda fluid is really what should be in there but alot of people I know run GM syncro mesh...there are bulletins on most honda trannys for 3rd gear for some reason even the new si's have a bulletin for 3rd and 2nd gear grinds

These threads are everywhere. same oil can be used in all honda/acura b and d series engines. SEARCH! However, Honda MTF is probably the best out there. Ive used synchromesh and it is just a bandaid if you have a grind. It will grind after 5k miles of use. (typically)

i have used all kinds of fluids in my tranny.
GM syncromesh
Penziol syncromesh
Honda MTF (old version)
10w-30
and truthfully 10w30 was the best all of them gave me a reverse grind except for 10w30.
the new honda MTF is way to thin for our older trannies
there is a huge thread on www.d-series.org about which one is better and 90% believe 10w-30 is better for our old transmission and i believe it as i have tried most of them in my transmission.

perhaps some synthetic diesel oil (I swear I saw some shell shell rotella 5w-something diesel oil) would allow longer service intervals due to increased detergent?

dont mess with penzoil. i put it in my tranny and it got milky brown in 1.5k miles. started to catch the synchros. better off using the two courts from honda. Spend the 10 to 15 bucks. you will thank everyone that has said "use honda mtf" Good Luck.

im not sure if you guys have seen the new Honda MTF...its as thin as water and it wont work very well with our older trannies.
yes i use advance auto 10w-30 now and have been for a while.
ANother thing is im only refering this to D16 trannies.
i have about 175k on my tranny no grinds shifts smooth now.

http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mtf.aspx specifically says GM (now amsoil) synchromesh fluid "replaces Honda Genuine MTF fluid for manual transaxles." This site also says the GM synchromesh is the lower cost alternative. Not so. At $11 a quart (per the site), it is more expensive than what my Honda dealer charges for the Honda MTF.
