Default how do u know when the motor is about to go?

my car is really starting to scare me, oil is burning like crazy (quart every 50 or so miles, yes really)... black smoke from the exhaust occasionally, the white smoke out of the exhaust is becoming more consistent and getting even cloudier... is it about to go or what?

Prepare to be driving another car soon. You never actually know when its going to go mine wasnt nearly as bad as yours and all of a sudden the next day it wouldnt start and ever since than it hasnt started. I drove a car that I was using drain oil in since it was burning so much oil (like a quart and a half a day) and I knew someone that worked at a shop so free oil!! I drove it like that for nearly a year it always started for me and I went and sold it to a friend and a week later the motor blew so well you never actually do know until its too late. Oh and he only paid $50 bucks for the car and he knew it was a POS.......Just so I dont get **** on for selling a friend a crappy car.

that really sucks, hopefully this engine can get in as soon as possible ... I'm about to print out this thread and show it to my parents so they can loan me some money! it sucks knowing this... what is black smoke a sign of? I know the white smoke is a sign of coolant (it has a really weird smell to it), black smoke is oil right?

Yeah, it's probably about to go. But, you may just have blown the head gasket. Check for oil in your coolant. Other options are a warped head (possibly the cause of a blown head gasket), a cracked head, or a cracked block. You will probably have to tear the engine down to know for sure. Blue smoke is oil, black smoke is usually a sign of the engine running too rich.

try thicker oil like a 20w50

and some "stop smoke" I think STP makes it you can a little more milage out of it and it shouldn't burn as much

You didn't mention if it was overheating...is it?

not overheating... even in the hottest days, doing good on that

ya I thought about a heavier weight oil, the white smoke doesn't really bother me - but the black smoke really had me worried

im hoping that I can get another month and a half out of it and get whatever engine possible...

well really I want to get a d15b JDM vtec or a z6... really it doesn't matter, the cheapest way to gain some power / reliability

right now I have a stock DX d15b2 engine, with dpfi *can u say slowwwwwwwww*

i should have about $1100 in that month and a half if I did my math right, what would be the cheapest way to go if I were to do the swap right (replacing tbelt, water pump, plugs / wires) saw a jdm d15 for $500 on hmo, z6 for $600 on nippon

tough choices, I may just stick it out and go with a z6 - jdm d15 is getting confusing, it's like a ZC

Get a 12 pack, and do burnouts till she blows... i'm thinking about 3 complete burns before you get a little metal to snap. beats tossing a rod or something on the highway at 70mph... though the smoke coming from under the hood reminded me of a Roush motor in a NASCAR.

I would say grab a ZC. DOHC and they are proven to be tough little motors. No more confusing to hook up than a D16a6 really, just DOHC (unless you get the SOHC) and you gotta run tthe cylinder position sensor wire to the end of the exhaust came I believe (can't remember exactly, I never owned a ZC! But I have driven them, nice motors ) Hell, you gotta do the MPFI conversion anyway. Plus no messy vtec wiring or vtec activated rpm switches or OBD1 conversions... CHEAP!

your kinda on the right track... but ZC's are so confusing, and people say they aren't very reliable... I just want an engine that is ONE year of a car, not like a mix between 50 of them for a ZC... like prelude, integra, civic, crx - that's just too much to handle for a single engine

i am looking more into a zc right now, but the decision is going to depend... I don't drive my cars hard (i am an auto!)... but about the dizzy for the ZC, would the one on the ZC work fine?

so far, i've found out

Timing Belt 1988 Prelude 2.0 Si 14400-PK2-004 - 27.45
Water Pump 89-91 CRX 19200-P01-004 - 48.10
88-89 Integra Sparkplugs and wires
Upper Radiator Hose 1984 Accord 19501-PD2-000 - 18.02 (needs trim)
Lower Radiator Hose 88-91 CRX 19502-PM3-000 - 13.33

and all new mounts (my engine mounts are bad)
