Default Toasted Catalytic Converter after One month!!!!

I installed a JDM header (Jet Coated) and Hi Flow Cat. from Jegs about a month ago. I noticed that the cat. had began to rattle yesterday. I took it by the muffler shop this evening and the catalytic converter is toasted. I dynoed the car last weekend and we left the timing at 18, I verifyed that the timing is still set at 18. Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe is it that I have not reset the ECU? Actually I forgot about resetting it until a couple weeks after the installation and I still have not reset it.

I toasted the first cat I used with my 4to1. it lasted only about a month. actually the honeycomb broke off the inner housing. Rattled like mad. They claimed it was running too rich, which was BS (kinda).

The second one, same brand, model, has lasted without issue for a while now.

Wierd, I guess the first was deffective . . . .

Jeff - Can you give us more details on the cat? What brand? What size? Where did you get it?

I'll assume by toasted you meant melted inside. If the cat gets too hot the honeycomb will actually melt and plug the holes, this is usually due to running too rich.

It is rattling inside. I guess that it has just broken apart. It is still under a 90 day warranty and I will try another.

hehehe, I blew out two cats when I ran turbo and I mean blew them out. The screening inside the cat rolled up into a ball and my exhuast sounded very muffled. I ran a straight pipe after that. It is possible that you might have gotten a faulty cat, and it should be replaced free of charge since most of them have some kind of a warrenty.

Your JetHot Coating keeps underhood temps down, but if it is very efficient it will send all that heat to the cat----> meltdown time.

That is what I'm starting to think. I will probably have to talk to Dave at SMS about a Car Sound Cat.

Check the manufactured date of the 2-1/4" cat, was it 11/99. Carsound told me they haven't had any problems with the 3" cats. Which one was the recent failure?
