Rookie builder needs Y8 valvetrain advice...
Hey guys. Could use some advice on my Y8 head buildup. First .. here are my objectives for the process: Y8 head to be used on a stock Y8 block. No F/I. Will be milled ~1mm to give a CR of about 10-10.5:1. I want it good for about 8000rpm redline, but nothing more.
Those objectives in mind, I now need to buy valves, springs, and retainers. Can someone offer some advice on appropriate components?
I don't want to cheap out, but at the same time, I'd rather not spend 5 grand I didn't need to.
Are the stock retainers good enough for what I've stated? If I need to replace them, can anyone recommend brands/links? etc., etc.

I looked at Crower's stuff before.. it looks really good, and their site is excellent. But it's pretty expensive. Like I said .. I'm not against paying for good stuff, but there's no sense in forking out for stuff I don't need.
Along with the valve springs you pointed out, Crower also sells Ti retainers. Should I get those too? Or are stock Honda retainers okay? What about valves? Crower makes stainless steel ones, but they're like $300. Would OE Honda valves be okay?

you think crower stuff is expensive?
it's a good thing your not building up a B-series VTEC engine.......stuff for that is double or triple the cost.........
crower valve train components are the most affordable around.........150 bucks for a set of valve-springs is a steal........
as for the stainless steel valves.........not really necessary unless your going turbo or a big shot of nitrious.......

Actually yeah, I suppose 150 for springs is pretty reasonable (the cost is exactly why I'm NOT building a B series
). Like I said, no F/I at all, no nitrous, just higher compression and slightly higher revs. I suppose the only real impact on the valves from that would be increased heat .. so you think the stock Honda valves can handle 10.5:1 and 8000rpm?
Will Crower's Ti retainers be necessary too?
