Propane Injection
one of my Bmw buddies was talking about how he was going FI on his M3 and was going to use propane injection, Ive never heard of this before and was wondering if you guys had any information you can share with me thanks

propane injection is used on diesel engines, so unless he has a diesel engine in his bimmer hes BS'n.
Also, they dont make the M3 with a diesel engine, so hes just plain retarded.
Hope this helps.
Oh, propane injection works the same way nitrous does but with different fuel types.

Propane has an octane rating of ~114. it's compressed, and when released into the intake, it will cool the air charge which gives further gains of colder IATS. which is GREAT.
With propane injection you can significantly decrease your chances of detonation, which means more boost !
It's reletively inexpensive, and can be had at a lot of gas stations around. A very worthwhile upgrade for someone that needs more power, but doesen't want to run race gas all the time. there are some VERY nice kits out here... here are a few links..

The ProPAIN Seems to be my favorite, and judging by others who have it, it seems to work very well...

Ummm, not exactly correct. Propane is use mostly in diesels, but it *can* be used in gasoline engines. In fact, a popular upgrade for Vipers is Propane +
Nitrous injection. See http://www.btrviper.com/750.html

Hatchy is correct, (as you probably figured out from my posting.
)
Propane is a good fuel, and burns a helluva lot cleaner than gas!
There are a few who have converted their car to completely run on propane (which is entirely possible if you had the correct equipment to convert)

yea propane injection is great if your looking for a cheaper way to get higher octane gas for less money. The guy who runs IPO, Import Power Online, has a sweet VR-4 with around 500 to the ground with pump gas thanks to the propane injection.
all in all the kit is definally worth it considering the amount of money it will save you in the long run.

those are pretty expensive kits. but what about the propane when it gets expelled through the bov? most people dont have fires constantly burning in their engine bays that could ignite the propane but its like having fuel leaking in your engine bay. thoughts? i want to get something like this to avoid running racegas all the time but the kits are pretty expensive. any other cheaper options?
Alcohol injection has a similar effect, is dirt cheap, and has the added safety benefit of not being a tank of compressed, flammable gas.

My friend is running 12 pounds of non-intercooled boost on his stock 9:1 compression mustang on 89 octane and propane injection with no timing retard. Nuff said!
Just make sure you mount the propane tank standing straight up. You can't tilt it like N2O because propane is still in liquid form when it's in that tank and for some reason (I believe due to safety) it must be mounted straight up otherwise it might leak. Please correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure I am right.

what kind of kit? price? etc. thanks.

They make tanks that lay down, but the valve is on the top...I think that's all that has to be upright...you can't have a side-mounted valve...

I thought I would see where this thread went for a while to see where the understanding of propane was here ..... propane is a great octane booster on FI setups. The Buick Gran National guys are at the forefront of it. I've posted on this before.... so when the search function works again you can search for it and the links.
Otherwise go to google and search on gran national and propane. You will be amazed at how effective it is. As with other solutions, tuning and control is key.

Howitt's right about cheap propane injection. The most expensive thing is the solenoid needed, and for that I referr you to the nifty DIY Nitrous page at www.nitrous.info which is a great read even if you wouldn't dream of doing that to your car.
