it's just taking the bottom dead center volume of the cylinder, and dividing that by the tdc volume

Total engine displacement = 0.7854 x D x D x Travel x # of cylinders.

D* = diameter (bore)
Travel* = piston travel (stroke)

*in inches

Fill up your cylinder with water and pour it into a measuring cup.
