Timing Belt question.
Ok this is probably a really stupid question to most but i dont know the answer and i tried a search with no help. I want to know wheres the Timing Belt Tensioner (sp?). Im trying to loosen my timing belt so i could put some cam gears on. Any help is greatly appericated. Thanks.
*Edit* How do i know that my car is on TDC? Sorry i wont know if i dont ask right?

On the SOHC, the #1 cylinder (closest to t-belt) will be at TDC when the arrow on the cam gear marked UP is pointing up, and the other mark aligns with the pointer just below the cam gear. There is also a mark on the crank pulley to align with a mark on the lower t-belt cover, and another mark on the lower t-belt sprocket (behind the crank pulley) that aligns with an arrow on the oil pump. All these should align when #1 cyl. is at TDC... kinda like planets aligning or something lol
As for the tensioner, it's behind the middle timing belt cover, below the driver side engine mount. You will need to support the engine and remove the engine mount to get to it. It's a smooth pulley (no teeth or ribs) w/ a bolt thru the middle, and a spring attached to it, which is what tensions the belt.

#14 on that diagram for a B series motor.
the tensioner is the first thing the timing belt passes over after the crank... on its way to the waterpump then the camgears.

If you loosen the bolt, you can slack up the belt (it will push the pulley down, stretching the spring). Then you can pull it off.
