Default Yet another..an Icebox experience.

About two hours ago, I just completed my Icebox installation and I just got back from a test drive.

1. It is NOT OEM quality. It is subpar. The housing looks kinda cheap and so are some of the materials. The cover "snaps" on, and not held by screws like OEM.
2. The fit is MUCH better then AEM CAI. No rubbing against AC line or whatever. Its quite snug.
3. This BEAST works. The throtle response was so much better than stock*. From low rpm to high rpm, I felt hp gains. When I saw comptech's dyno, it showed double digit hp gains. I was a bit skeptical but wait until you have it. It will make a believer out of you.
4. The SOUND. It is not as loud as AEM CAI but when you get off on it..it has that mean deep sound that makes you want to floor it. It is absolutely AWESOME. It sounds like a Klipsch subwoofer on steroids.
5. The comptech installation instructions is not too great. I got a lot of help from other forum members to eliminate some guesswork. (Thanks to Aleph and norice for some tips)
6. Anyone like decals? You get four Comptech decals. A pair in black and a pair in white.
7. This is by far, the best bang for the buck I ever spent on my GSR. You will fall in love with your car all over again.

Footnote:
* I had AEM CAI...but I could not stand the way it fits (rubbing all over the place), the hydrolock paranoia, and the filter getting all disgusting and filthy in days, and the unwelcome noise....so I went back to stock intake for 2 months until today.

Hey jl74 I'm glad you got it installed without any problems. However did you noticed that one of the ac bolt is touching the side of the intake coming out of the box?

It is about 3-4mm apart. Yeah. I know what you mean. For my installation. It does not "touch" any part at all. I really carefully inspected everything after the installation. I just took my car for some hard driving. I'll check it again tomorrow morning.

Humm I wonder if the 97 an up Tegs got a little more space around the area. Mine is real tight and the bolt is making contact. I just placed a piece of silicon between the bolt and the intake.

Hmm... HondaIntegraLS, will you be dynoing your car? I'm interested to see how well it works on the LS. I dynoed my car with a DC Sports DAC and advanced timing, my car seems to be good on hp (125.5hp), down on torque (109.4) and has a huge power dip at 4000 before surging back to where it should be by 5000. I'm curious if that's the intake or what.

I really think it's worth the try. I've owned an AEM CAI and I like the Icebox better. The AEM CAI does work just as well IMO, however, I cannot stand the compromises it comes with. It is just like having a fine *** gf or wife, it is high maintenance.

i notice my icebox was touching both the ac lline nut and the chassis. i agree that the plastic is kinda subpar and the lid takes a while to get used to putting on. But when it started to pour, I knew I made the right choice to switch from the AEM!

PAT does it rub any of the hard plastic off? I'm worrying about that.

LostGsr, too early to tell if its scraping stuff off. I did wrap both the nut, chassis wall and the box tubing with electrical tape though!

For u guys looking to buy, http://www.speeddistributors.com is a good place to get them from, 332 shipped

Keys if you have the Gsr the Icebox will mount fine with the stock intake tube. You do however need the Comptech dropin filter.

LostGsr-do you know if my K&N RU-3130 would fit in that thing?

Does anyone have any ideas whether or not this thing would really considerably out perform my current set up (stock air box with a portion of the resonator tube going down to the ground, ending up about 1/2 inch in from the fender and 3 inches in front of it, and of course the RU-3130). Comptech says 19 max whp gain on the icebox, I like that idea, just wondering if it would be worth it over what I have already. Any input or help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Nugget I don't know if the K&N Ru3130 will fit the Icebox but I do know there are some members here that are trying that combination. Before I installed the Icebox I did the same setup as you with the stock airbox and a dryer hose leading into the back of the turn signal. It worked well and a noticeable gain from it. Now, to be honest with you from driving with the Icebox for about a week, I didn't really notice any added gain from switching from the dryer hose setup to the Icebox setup. It's probably due to the fact that the setup is very similar. But I have to admit the look and quarlity of the Icebox is way better than my ghetto setup before. Also with the Icebox the intake sound is "quietier".

00silverLS I'm not sure it is the same performance as the Icebox but what I'm saying is that with the new Icebox I can't seem to feel any improvment over my last setup. Of course this will vary from person to person. With these upgrades you can't tell for sure unless you dyno it. My old setup was simply take off the airhorn looking resonator underneath the stock airbox. With the the resonator gone there should be a oval hole on the bottom of your airbox. Take a dryer hose and attach it to the box and rout the other end to the back of your turn signal and you are done. I didn't take any picture of it because there are many members here that has pictures of their similar setup, I'm sure they can send you a link. I also presently switched to the Icebox and no longer using the dryer hose.

I did the same thing as LostGsr but instead of a dryer hose I took the blach u-shaped section of the resonator and cut it right after the first bend and before it physically links up with the white section of the resonator. This places the opening right literally hugging the black plastic unercarrige piece, exactly where the vented portion is directly in front of the wheel well. I cut the piece at an angle so it puts a much wider opening toward the ground. If anyone is interested and needs any thing clarified, just ask. Hope this helps.

BTW, thanks LostGsr.

I have the stock intake and fit is perfect. BTW, to add more room so it won't rub on the AC line, what I did today was put one 2 mm washer on the bracket on the left side, I used a smaller bushing on right (passenger side) so the icebox is moved towards more to the passenger side giving more room against the ac line bolt. I got them at Home Depot BTW.
