Default SOHC Vtec Swap Questions

I was originally considering a b-series swap but since i am still in school i really cant afford that right now. So i am looking at the D16Z6.

How easy is it to swap in?
THe D16Z6 is OBDI.

HOw can i keep it OBD0 until i figure out how to convert to OBD1?

What will i need to complete the swap?

Thanks!

You could swap in a d16a6 and keep OBD0 and then in the future swap on a sohc vtec head to create a mini-me. To swap in the a6 you would need an 88-91 SI Dizzi, ECU, Injector Resistor Box, to complete the DPFI to MPFI conversion.

i dont want an a6. i want a block and head that were made from the factory for each other.

All USDM D16 blocks are very similar.

Do you plan to keep the Y7 block, or switch to something else?

Keep in mind the D16Y8 bottom end (block) has been known to have bearing failures... I believe the Z6 is the most durable D16 bottom end (hence the 7200 rpm natural redline of the Z6).

You have plenty of options, but I would limit your reasoning to just getting a Z6, or Y8 head. Either one would bolt-up to your Y7 block with no trouble... Keep in mind you'd be wasting time & money by purchasing an entire D16Y8 motor.

true about the Y8 bottom end and wasting money on a whole Y8 motor.
I recently did a head swap on my Y7 engine and i bought a whole 98 Civic EX for $400 dollars to do the swap (it was some hillbilly *** junkyard) its a piece of american(i mean japanese) pie and i can help. Its not that hard.

Get the Y8 head and ecu and knock sensor, solenoid plug, and pressure plug its all ya need and a new EX head gasket

How is your Y7 not OBDII ?? but any way youll need to convert to obdII for the Y8

Which one would be easier to swap into my CRX? (CRX DX with D16Y7)
The D16Y8 is OBDII (right?) and D16Z6 is OBDI.

HOw can i keep it OBD0 until i figure out how to convert to OBD1?

What will i need to complete the swap?

Thanks!
put the Z6 head on the Y7... or if u get the Z6 longblock, use the longblock

keeping it OBDO means u using a 88-91 Si ECU (or 88-89 PG7 ecu from integra), distribuitor, and injectors....Si tranny (best one)

to complete swap, tools, cherry pciker, beer, more tools ,air tools if u can, another car u can kick the **** out of, patience....u can use stock moounts, tranny, shiflinkage, axles, ect...

IF i keep it OBD0 will i be able to engage vtec without a vtec controller? I dont want a vtec controller at all.

I kind of want to get the z6. Im not sure where i can get a z6 head. People have been selling z6's for as low as $400-500 CDN

whats do good about the y7 compared to the y8?

I can probably get some used 88-89 integra slugs off my buds engine. WOuld it be ok to use those? any precautions? i need lots of info on what needs to be done in building an engine ie what needs to be replaced etc

i also want power, i know for fact that the d16z6 puts out 125 hp.
If i just swap the head onto the block, what kind of compression am i looking at and how much power? I might turbop it later on, who knows

do the full z6/y8 swap, and convert it to obd1. little harder, but worth it in the long run.

have to do the mpfi wiring first, them you can either do the wiring yourself, or get a conversion harness from someone. blown90hatch sells them on here, and they are really nice

You could always get a "JDM" D15B from HmotorsOnline.

you will still need to wire up the vtec wires. and you also need to use the 92+ 4 wire heated o2 sensor instead of the single wire sensor.

Keep in mind, if you get a y8 head, you can use the Y8 distributor and run OBD-I with it.

It was kind of a pain in the ***... I hated making my own convertor harness. In retrospect, if I had to do it again, I would buy a convertor harness.

clarification... so in order to swap a sohc vtec into a crx dx... you will have to convert from dpfi to mpfi first... then swap and run an additional wire for vtec... and that should be it, right?... anything else i am missing?... lemme know... thanks...
