Default who needs fifth gear anyways! (tranny help please)

yeah so my tranny's a piece of ****. it's an Si tranny on my ZC in my 90 DX.

a while back, all of a sudden my third gear started grinding real bad. like every time i went into third, (up or downshift) it would grind. well i've been more carefull shifting and the problem seemed to have disappeared. no matter what rpm i'm at, i can shift into third without grinding. absolutely fantastic huh. god damned miracle.

so now my fifth gear is giving me ****. it never grinds, but i just can't get it into fifth. when the car's cold, i usually don't have a problem, but once i've been driving it for a while, it just won't "notch" into 5th. sometimes if i'm lucky and i ram it hard in there with one quick motion out of 4th, it'll slide in, but most of the time it won't go in. i tried doubleclutching (shutup! i think this is actually what it means...) where i clutch in -shift to N-clutch out-clutch in- shift into 5th. sometimes it helps, but it never works. every time i get it to go into 5th, it's after i've rammed it in there. and even when i ram it in, it'll never grind, just "notch" in.

what do you think would cause this? low fluid? i do have a small fluid leak around my tranny, and it's been leaking for a while now. or is it just an old tranny with fucked syncros? i've heard motor mounts can cause tranny problems from Mista Bone. but would old, droopy mounts cause me to loose a gear? it's frustrating...

well i think the reason it goes in sometimes is that you might be rev matching the gears so it sorta goes in

I would have guessed that the saggy mounts would have effected 1, 3, and 5, but who knows. My 5th is harder to get into than all my other gears (but not by much). Check your fluid because it is a good place to start.

A short shifter can cause the shifter to hit the exhaust pipe. Do you have one?
I would think bent shift linkage would cause havoc too. Do you recall hitting anything?
Hopefully someone else can help more.

first, check your engine mounts. bad engine mounts will cause this problem. then check your shift forks.

was the tranny rebuilt before it went in to your car? this sounds similar to a problem I had with my si trans right after i rebuilt it, only mine was a little more severe. The cause was that I installed the bearing at the end of the mainshaft backwards. It then colapsed and left my main shaft with room to move side to side. this affected my 3rd (grinding), 4th (noisy), and 5th (wouldn't go in at all).

well i have a short shifter but it's not that short. and i know it dosen't hit my exh. pipe. and my linkage is a new (used new) one because i bent mine when i did the swap.

i need to get off the lazy horse and check the fluid...

thanks for the responces

it's not rebuilt, but i bought it used 4 years ago from hasport (honda auto salvage). but those symptoms you said you had are damn close to mine.

and i know when i had the tranny swap done way back when, they had to use a new mount, i think it was the rear one, but not exactly sure which one. but i'm sure they could all use replacing right about now.

you said you rebuilt your tranny...if you don't mind me asking, how much did all the parts cost to so such a thing?

I have friends that own a tranny shop, so I got the kit for cost.
rebuild kit with all new syncros, bearings and seals: apx $170
they said they could get me a tranny that was profesionally rebuilt for $350 + core and after all of the expenses of re-rebuilding after the problem I described above, I wish I went for the one that was already built.
