differences between alpine 7894 and 9813 HUs?
so i was going to buy the alpine 7894 head unit, and i created a post asking about if carstereoexpo.com was good to buy it from.. but then i was recommended to buy the 9813 (i guess the 2003 model?). what are the differences on this? anybody have it? also, where could i get it for a good deal? the 7894 retails (on alpine's website) for $450 but i found it for $300 on carstereoexpo.com. can i find a similar deal on the 9813? (which according to alpines website, retails for $400)
the only difference that I could tell is that the 9813 plays wma files along with mp3 and regular cds. Also the 9813 looks a little better and has a 5 band eq instead of a 4. Basically minor differences just go with the 9813.

9813 - Has:
6 Channel time correction
6 Position 24db crossovers (2 or 3way)
5 Band parametric eq
7894 - Doesn't have:
Edit: Only has 4 channel time correction
Only has 3 position 12db crossover
No parametric eq
9813 wins by a long shot and the MSRP is lower, but the 7894 is older, so I don't know which one would be cheaper.
Edit: It's even a better value than the 9815. (according to their crappy site) Who the hell is going to pay $100 more for i-Personalize?

Too bad you can't compare them side by side

I was at the same crossroads as you are. Torn between 7894 and 9813 . I bought the 9813 for $300 and I love it. 9811 can be had for a little less, like $268 it lacks some of the features and built-in amp is less powerful.
No question about it, 9813 wins by a long shot. I'm sure the MP3 decoding has improved. The display is different as well. Watch out for unauthorized alpine dealers though. You might not get good warranty coverage. I went to my local stereo dealer and told him about the online price and he beat the price. I had to pay sales tax but no shipping. He said for warranty, they have to send it in to Alpine. I don't think Alpine will let just anyone send stuff in.

BTW : notice the folder search buttons on the 9813. These are way cool when you create folders on your MP3 cd. Makes it easy to find the tracks.

Like I said, my local stereo shop beat the online price by a mile. Good Luck!

what is the name of your local stereo shop? i see youre in west palm beach.. im in tampa. do they have the same shop over here possibly?
Does anyone know if the 9813 1.) supports ID3v2 tags, and 2.) will scroll tags that are larger than the display. Basically, I want it to show both the track number and song title from a file (my mp3s are sorted by album in seperate directories). I have seen other head units (Sony) that simply chop off the part of the ID3 tag that won't fit on the display. Any ideas?

I just returned my 7894 yesterday because the display went bad (half lit up amber, half was green) Now I'm riding around without a radio coz the Circuit Citys don't have the new radios in yet.
I would say the main difference between the two is that the 9813 has bass engine pro which adds the 5 band eq compared to bass engine plus. I believe it also has 6 channel time correction compared to 4 channel on the 7894.

couple of model's old but not bad, looks from what I can see to be in good shape. Pioneers can look pretty cheap (the 44XX series and such).
My personal reasons for going from Clarion to Alpine:
1. Not much of a SQ change.
2. I want XM radio, Clarion only has Sirius
3. Alpine has an MP3 cd changer.
They are pretty damn unattractive though.
Edit: Forgot about time correction.

I'm not too crazy about the looks of the current Alpines either, but feature wise, you can't beat them. The display of the 9813 looks like there's too much going on, but I'm sure not all of those will be on all the time. Besides, you could use the blackout feature and all you'll see are the green buttons.
Why the hell is it called blackout if the brightest parts are still illuminated? I never understood that.

Yeah I was kind of wondering that too. I thought when they said blackout, the entire thing would go out, but it doesn't.
