Default Tech question for OBDI and OBDII

for a 97 Type R... was the computer obd I or obdII??

What year did OBDII start for the for the US market... from what I understand it started in '98

I was debating this with a fellow Performance Junky and I'm telling him that 97 is obd I and he says that all Type R's from 96 (including JDM ITR's) all have OBD II computers... could some one quote a sourse for me as well??? Maybe a link or something to that effect.....

Ps... and telling me that the computers will not match work with the later year wiring harness will not cut it. He wants more proof than that.

Thanks Guys...

Both of you are wrong..

97 ITR is OBDII.
JDM ITRs are OBDI although newer ones (not sure of the years) have the same plugs as OBDII ECUs.

all JDM ITR's have obdII plugs, but all of them use obd1 programming.

I stand corrected on the "newer years" part

"dawhiteboy" ROFLMAO

edit: anyways, i'm not an integra ecu guru.. so do any of you guys know if integras have obd2a and obd2b style plugs? all the integra ecu's i have seen use obd2a plugs.. even an ecu that i saw in a 1999 integra LS.

if you are not familiar with obd2a and obd2b..here is what i am talking about:

the top one being obd2b (which came in 99-00 civics) and the second from the top being obd2a (which came in 96-98 civics). the second from the top is the style i have seen in all the integra ECU's i have worked with.. i've never seen the obd2b style ecu for integras.

TIA

dude, I replied to him, not you. I meant "both" as in himself and his friend were both partially wrong. sorry for the confusion.

jonas: OBDIIr1 was used in 96-early 97 integras. OBDIIr2 was used after that. The plugs didn't change because of that, just the programming (at least, I believe the plugs stayed the same, I'm not sure on that either). The plugs DID change in 2000 for integras, but the OBDII stuff stayed the same I believe. There are differences though, for emissions and the 00-01 ITR cams (fuel/timing I'd assume, dunno though). 00+ integras and 99-00 Si's use the same plugs but with some variations on what pins are used (namely fuel pump relay and immobolizer).

hope this helps.

2000 Australian ITRs have OBD2a plugs. I'm guessing JDM ecus would be the same.

ok, so from your guys input, this is what i'm comming up with so far:
- 96-01 USDM integras are obdII (thats fairly simple).
- 96-99 USDM integra ECU's use the obdIIa style plugs
- 00-01 USDM integra ECU's use the obdIIb style plugs

- 96-01 UKDM integra ECU's all use the obdIIa style plugs?
- i know that 95.5 (96) - 98 JDM ITR ecu's use obdIIa style plugs.

what about 99? and 00-01 JDM ITR ecus? sgT?

edit: the reason i wonder is just for future reference when doing a swap on my friends' cars. see, for civics its much easier
96-98 civic = obdIIa plugs
99-00 civic = obdIIb plugs
