Default spark plugs...can you clean them?

are spark plugs cleanable? For example, if you run really rich and get thick carbon buildup can you clean that off and they will work fine? just curious because I had a set of brand new plugs that were used to get my car running right, but the car was never actually driven with the plugs in, only started up a few times. no a big deal just curious if its possible.

once you get the car running right, it should burn the excess carbon right off
