180 miles into break in and no 4th or reverse all of a sudden
Was out driving this Sat and car fell out of 4th gear. Babied it home. Removed the B&M short shift adapter on a whim and it made it worse. Couldnt get it into reverse or fourth after that.
Took care not to bend any cables on the removal and install. Checked tonight and nothing is bound, twisted, or out of place.
First 180 miles were fine. Consisted of several trips to work and back. Didnt change anything when it fell out of gear.
Changed the tranny fluid and nothing changed.
Checked everything I can think of.
Swap/install consisted of LSD install. Had the tranny completely apart, but the operation seemed flawless for the first 180 miles. Also filled all the mounts with 3M window weld if that matters (maybe it needs a little more movement to get into gear?).
Thinking it has something to do with the shift cables, but I am at a loss.
Was wondering if anyone has had troubles with the cables after a swap/install and had this problem.
About to pull the tranny and put in the spare one, but hoping for help from someone here before thats necessary.

isnt there some procedure to follow when installing it? something like put it in reverse first? i dunno man, i just saw nobody responded.. thats the best i could come up with
Maybe this helps you out.
I had a similar problem with my tranny while the car was still relatively new. I was shifting up to 3rd when something just let go. I had like 15inches of shift travel from 3 to 4. I could only get into 1st 2nd 4th and sometimes R. Took it to Honda because it was under warranty. turns out that a bolt that held the linkage in place on the top of the tranny had sheared off. I can't describe it much better than that since Honda did the work
you've probably checked all that stuff but just a thought

Well. Found out what was going on. Turns out you have to put it together right to make it work:banghead:
You can see here. This bearing has an ORIENTATION !
Here's what happens when you put it in backward.
This is the side that should have faced it:
Guess once the 180 mile mark rolled around this piece decided to give.
It sits on the shaft prior to putting on the bearing.
This is the side of the bearing that should have been touching the piece in the above pic, but you can see its clearly worn by the oiler on the outside of the shaft.
As a result
Looks like I was damn lucky to make it home.
Thankfully this guy saved the other components (like the new LSD and tapered bearings). Wondered why I couldnt get any particles out of the oil I drained out of the tranny. The magnet in the tranny caught them all.
Cliff notes:
1) This bearing will go in backward.
2) Note orientation markings in the manuals (still cant figure out how I switched it around).
3) Honda trannies are pretty stout, but you have to put them together correctly.
Good news in all of this is that I have another tranny sitting in the garage.
You guys think I should just swap out the good shaft, bearing, oiler out of it or just put the LSD in the in the 2nd tranny and run with it?

You'd probably be better off putting your stuff in the new tranny. There may still be metal chunks in the old and you don't need a gear blowing out or locking up under full boost. I replaced just a gear on a tranny once and the metal chunks ended up getting in all of the other gears too. Needless to say when driving down the road, the trans would just lock up.
Took your advice Stew.
Put the LSD in the other tranny but now my preload is off.
Waiting till Tuesday to get the new shim.
This tranny is much less worn internally.

Hey what manual is that?? Is it a Honda service manual or just an LSD transmission manual, or just install instructions?
Trying to find out whether to buy the Honda Service Manual or something else.
Thanks

Its an OEM manual for the entire car.
I called the dealer and they gave me an 800 number to call and order it.

They should refer you to an 800 number.
I paid like $75 shipped....been so long ago.
Tell you what though. It has been by far the best investment I have made for my car.
