sounds like the master cylinder to me, chk the obvious by looking at how much brack fluid is in the resiviour underneath the hood, if its low it is possible to get air in the lines and cause such a problem, if there is still plenty of fluid then it is probably the master cylinder
Sounds like air in your brake system. How long since you changed your brake fluid & bled the air out? Should be every 2 years.
Maybe the master cylinder is shot. Search... There's descriptions of symptoms for air vs. MC.

does the car shake when you depress the brake pedal hard? If so then you need to change your brake pads/rotors.

then it is probably the master cylinder, should only be a couple hundred bucks to replace at the max, or if your handy do it yourself, its not too bad.
Chalk another one up for bad master cylinder. Did this problem start fairly recently or after you had the brake work done?

Im voting for air in the brake fluid, bleed your brakes could be the problem and save you $$$, the same exact symptoom happened with all the older cars I restored super squishy pedal that keeps on giving...

All its gonna cost is replacing the brake fluid, you can do it yourself fairly easily you just need someone to pump the brake pdeal while you bleed...and the reason there would be air in there in the first place is because the mastercyliner IS leaking...so this would be a temporary fix...how long was the span of time it got bad in?
