Default For those of you who have installed a short shifter...

I installed my short shifter today, and now it is really hard to get it to go in gear. I have to pull or push really hard... any ideas why? I installed a new ES stabilizer bushing and I'm thinking it might have been the two bolts that hold that in place, maybe they aren't tight enough.

The bushing I replaced is #18 on this picture:

Anyone know why it would be so hard to get in gear?

Thanks!

Was it hard before you put in the shortshifter? My guess is bolt number 26 is too tight.

your shifter is most likely touching you exaust. making it hard to shift. short shifters place your shiftlinkage really close to your exaust. i took a short shifter out of my car because it was rubbing on my exaust.

nah, you would know if it was on your exhaust, the problem is you probably tightened bolt 26 too tight, and your shifter probably doesn't have a bearing in it, so it will spin, so loosen the bolt nad put some grease in there, and you should have no problem. It worked for me.

It very well could be on your exhaust though, drop your exhaust down some and check after that, I had the same problem.

yeah make sure you lubed everything up with lithium grease (supplied w/ short shifter - at least my B&M did) and put new rubber o-rings on the bushing. get it right and you'll never wanna go back to the stock shifter.

pS : my stock exhaust system doesn't even come close to the bottom of the short shifter. B&M all the way

Sounds like you overtightened #26. Back it off a bit and use some locktite on it.

i had the same problem when i installed my short shifter. you just have to give it about a week for it to set the bushings and, it will loosen up back to the way it was, everyone i know that has put one in has had the same thing but it will go away after about a week.

Thanks everyone, I guess I will loosen up bolt #26 a bit. I tried this while I was under the car and it seemed like the nut would loosen and fall off. Should I just use some locktite?

It's not hitting the exhaust, it's quite a bit away from that...
