I was driving my parents 2002 2 door civic, and out of the blue I got a little warning light that read 'side airbag off'. Ths light quickly turned off after a few seconds, but why did it come on in the first place?

 

was somebody leaning in the path of the side airbag?

My one friend does this all the time in my RSX and its only him the way he sits the sensors in the seat can tell if they are in the path of the airbag or if you have something on the seat it will think its a person and your light will come disabling your side airbags

 

Dont the airbags come out like towards the side window? I dont think anything was in the way....I was driving the car and my feeble little 4'11" mother was riding shotty. I dunno how much she weighs, but do you think it was too little?

hmm i was unaware it ran a diagnostic to see if anything was in the seat, interesting...

 

as far as i know ep and dc5 side srs are in the sides of the seats (facing the doors). EM2's i couldnt tell you, my old 2k1 didnt have side srs. Read your owners manual, it will tell you in there.

 

the EM2 side airbags are exactly like the EP3 and the RSX they are on the side of the seats. The only reason that the light came on is because some one was leaning on the seat in a certain way. There is nothing to worry about it happens all the time. It just does that to prevent injury if something is in the path of the airbag or a if it were to go off it would not hurt anyone.
