If I could do it again: B or D
Do you have the b17a installed and running? Sounds like your worried something will go bad. Once you get a B-series in and running, its a huge improvement over a D-series.
Its a lot more work dropping a b-series in an EF, but its not a bad idea. The swap is pretty much straightforward.
I see where you're coming from though, d16's are strong engines but b-series have more potential.

The B series is a better platform hands down compared to the D. Built B-series will dominate a built D. It may cost more but you get what you pay for. Believe me I've learned form experience. I would never put a swap in my car again without building it. If you know what your doing nothing will stop you. No swap comes esay especially if its your first. Put you money where you want to. I don't like the d-series. The bore is too small

If you spend 2,000 just to swap a B16 in an EF, and you run what? About 14.7s or so. Think about if you spent 2,000 on the D Series like what it came with, hello low 13s or 12s.
Built B-series will dominate a built D. .
but...
u know what pisses me off.....
every one wants to be the ******* fastest and the best;
**** that....
people do swaps bc we love speed.... we love the sport and we like to have a fast, good looking car.....
if we would like to go as fast as posible.. then built a drag car.... straight line.. get a h22 into a EF chassis....
if u wanna auto-X, then get a B series and built it.,....
i can say that 60% of everyone here that has a swap uses it on a daily basis....
we use the car, and we want something FAST and RELIABLE!!!!!!!
a car (hondas for ex) that runs 12's and under will require lots of maintainance..... a lot... if u got turbo u need to change a lot of oil , to make sure the turbo its properly lubed etc etc.......
if u got a NA engine u will run very strong and realiable but theres always a certain limit on how much power u can make ....
my family has had muslce cars, imports, very powerful engines.... and i know that with a lot of power, comes more complications....requires more money and people that has been on the fast lane knows that...
mostly everybody here has to work lots of hrs, even 2 jobs to even afford a swap...
if he wants a D series.. let him do it.. easier, simpler, aftermarket supoort. if u blow it u can find another one almost anywhere.
get a B.. great also.... they are wonderful engines..... but if u **** up, then u gotta scavenge parts wich are more xpensive.....
IMO almost any engine can me modded to be a good one.... not saying STD's, DX's engines are... thats a diff story. will need mroe money....

I would never even consider building a d series motor!! Why put money into something that isn't that great to start with. Start with a b series and the possibilities are far superior to d series. lets say you spend 1500$ on a dseries, you either get a used turbo kit and stock internals or you get a halfway built allmotor single cam. you will be able to run maybe 8lbs of boost that will put you into mid/high 13's if you're lucky, and the allmotor setup will most likely yield low 14's or high 13's. or you could simply bolt in a b20 swap and run a high 13 with no bolt ons. and then if you throw 1000$ at that motor you'll get 12's no problem. this is all just my opinion and personal experiences. I've seen several fully built singlecam turbos on 17lbs get beat by b20's with cams and springs or b16's with some headworkwork allmotor.

not sure where you are getting your information from, but i have a few friends with b20s and one runs low 15s on a mostly stock one and another ran a low 13 with a very modified one.

Also i have seen b20vtecs run 14s/13s in Egs. Thats with I,H,E. Its all on how you work with it. But just simply putting it in there isnt going to get 13s.
Ive seen quite a few low budget sohcs in the mid 13s, low 13s range that were made with less budget than a swap would need.
Yea the straight B20 is not too great. 14's are pushing it . Whoevers got the biggest pockets is gonna probably be fastest. I am not rich. If I was I wouldn't own a honda for God sakes. For some reason the b series called my name along time ago, and its never let up. I put alot of time and money into my car and it beats 9 out of 10 cars. If I could only get that SC. Well were all family and theres no point arguing which is best so take the motor that calls you and run with it. Peace to all honda lovers. I
them all! Be carefull out there guys.

wow. this subject is very touchy, personally iam torn!! i cant decide. all the money i make goes to me! and i spend it on my car. really the only reason i was considering the d16z6 cuz it is newer. but im still torn on what i want in the long run. a fast car to kick around in and what else?? auto x or drag racing or both, some kind a new rally theory! haha well money is piling up in my pocket maybe i should save all summer and build up two cars! well no. yes!!
I am very happy with my swap, I love the powerband of the B. I like the parts for the B.
If i had to do it again.. i would have got a b16 all over again. no regrets.

if you had a bare shell and had 2,000 to spend.. would you really buy a D?
If my engine was still fine and didn't have 189,000 miles and a blown trans.. yeah i probably would have built it up.
and.. that $2,000 gets you brand new poly mounts, shift linkage, newer engine, trans, ecu etc...
yeah the D is readily available and costs around 500 for a longblock.. well guess what.. same with the B.

but my friends B20/VTEC made his HB run 13's.. just headers, home made intake, MSD ignition....
I swapped because of a broken trans.
. That was way before I knew what the hell I was doing. PARTS, PARTS, PARTS, OMG theres some many damn parts for the Bee. Which ones should I get. Who knows, I'll get them slowly but surely.

you should get ctr cams/ a b18c block with ctr pistons and put your b16 head on it.
I built the D to prove a point. A 400 hp D is more impressive than a 400 hp B IMO.
