Default Have you ever used your exhaust silencer?

Just wondering?

I stuck mine in the other day just too see what it was like. Well I was kinda getting tired of my loud *** exhaust. But any ways, I popped it in tightened the bolt.

When I started my car up... OMG, I realized I could have a normal conversation without yelling at the top of my lungs.

Sooo I decied to test it out on the butt dyno (driving it around). Man omg it killed about all the HP or gains my car could've ever got from my exhaust. lol It seemed like the throttle didnt even respond.

Then to make it even worse.. going down the highway, the bolt broke and the silencer shot out towards a car. They swirved to miss it, but I had to stop on the side of the road and run around like a chicken with my head cut off to get it. Oh, and I got a minor 1st degree burn atempting to pick it up.

HAHA. This kind of reminds me when my previous 2.5'' crushbent/thermal muffler was too loud. I went to the muffler shop and told em to put an exhaust cutout for me so I can run open header at tracks. Then I had em put the quietest muffler they had. Also, I noticed the piping which goes above the lca looked like civic piping.

So it was 2.5'' piping tapered to probably under 2'' to a crappy muffler. Driving on the street was horrible. Car even bogged when I hit vtec sometimes. It was definately weird.

Oh well...now i'm running 2.5'' mandrel/straight pipe/straight thru muffler.

Quote from an integra site:

I finally dynoed my car this weekend. I've made a short imagestation album with the results (until I can get it posted here on the site)

Conditions:
105 degrees, sunny, 29.84 in. Hg (1010 hPa)

Run1: AEM CAI, Comptech header, Comptech exhaust, Comptech quiet tip insert (exhaust silencer)
123.1 whp 116.8 lb/ft tq

I was disappointed w/ my power output (I was hoping for at least 130whp) and decided to do a second run and remove the silencer in the hopes that it would free up some exhaust flow and get me some more whp.

Run2: same mods as run 1, but I was curious as to how much whp the exhaust silencer was sacrificing, so I removed the silencer and ran with the straight thru exhaust.
123.1 whp 112.2 lb/ft tq

Peak power was the exact same on both runs which surprised me......but what surprised me even more was when I looked at the dyno plot and realized that I had actually lost power when I removed the silencer. When they overlayed both runs on one graph, you can clearly see that the car showed increases in whp and tq across the board execpt for the last 500 rpms where the non-silencer setup gained 1-2 whp.

Whats even more interesting is that in the midrange, at the "aem hump", there was a very noticeable spike in whp and tq w/ the silencer installed. Almost 5 whp and 5 lb/ft of tq!

Even though I was fairly dissappointed that I wasn't even putting 130whp to the ground w/ my mods. I'm glad that I ran the car w/ both setups. I was concerned when I bought it that the silencer would rob the car of some whp, especially in the higher rpms where the engine really needs to exhale. Who would have thought that I would have actually gained power throughout the midrange and nearly the entire top end!

Next stop for the BlueTeg and 150 whp project......carsound hi-flow cat, and some Crower 403 cams w/ all the fixings!

Mike D? SurferX? your thoughts on my silencer situation?
Any feedback from others is also welcome.
and heres the dyno chart to go with it:

Silencer does not really effect horsepower in the least.

Hmmmmmmmmm

I'm gonna go dyno my **** for myself. I'm pretty interested too. Buch of the guys wanna get some baselines ran, so I might tag along.

As for the butt dyno results. OMG you could so tell. Maybe it was pscologic or something. But **** beans, you could tell. I'll get actual proven numbers tho.

HAHA! I can picture squirming to get it. I use mine when I'm with a female and I want to have a conversation with her. It always seems louder when I'm with a girl than when I'm with my friends.

LOL I hear that.

I can't believe it popped out tho! That was a real nice anodized bolt and nut. From what I can tell / imagine the thing must've snapped in half. Sigh.....

I'm making a trip to home depot or something tomorrow to look for a set of wing nuts that'll fit this thing.

Lol, never EVER trust the butt dyno alone, no matter how much you think you feel a difference. You'll often be amazed by just how wrong the butt dyno is. The human mind does interesting things when it thinks something is gonna happen...
