Spoon built b18c is it worth it?
I was at http://www.inlinefour.com's web site and was looking at the spoon engines. I saw the $7000 price tag and thats a little to much right now. But i was talking to some of my friends and they said the know another site with the spoon egines for $4500, I checked it out and its legit. So is it worth it? I need this to be my daily driver and do not know a lot about the spoon engines other then what I have read. ANy advice would be nice.
my thoughts...
what reid is saying is correct, it is "just" a balanced a blueprinted R motor, but here are some points he didnt mention. A new R motor from acura will cost you at least 5k when you get all the individual parts. I have priced it out. At Spoon, they assemble a JDM B18c (R) motor, balance all parts, rods, pistons, and such, reassembled on the tight end of bearing clearences, install all gaskets, waterpump, oil pump, timing belt, cams, etc. the headgasket they use is an 11.3:1 spoon 2 ply gasket. I weighed pulling my motor and rebuilding to combat the oil usage problem, or buying a spoon from R&D for 4900$. end conclusion, ordered the spoon (will be here in T-minus 3-4 weeks) and i will keep (or Sell) my USDM longblock to offset the cost. New engine, simple install, high reliability, more power out of the box, and unknown after tuning. 5k is worth it in my opinion, for a brand new factory fresh, better than OEM R motor.
edit: i will be having a 'drop in the spoon motor in sunny florida' get together this spring

$7000 is crazy. We OFFER the longblock for $4991. Thats not a bad price considering what you get - IF you want or need a new motor. In most cases, you are better off rebuilding what you have, provided those that are doing the work CAN do the work.
I used to work for acura in AZ so I have a good idea of cost for all Type R parts. I got a free GSR head at work and I can still get most parts from friends at work. So I can't decide waht do do. My price for a usdm Type R head and block is about $3750 and some change. Its not far from $4500 for a pro built spoon engine. I have thought about getting the GSR head port and polished and then put a Type R block under it, and it the end after all that I will still be close to the spoon engine. I have most of the spoon parts you can getfor the DC2 but not the motor yet it would complete my spoon integra. Either or I will have fun I think.
Think twice before you decide to buy the Spoon longblock. Me and my friend both had one and it started to burn oil big time after like 9000km. One of them was brought directly from Spoon and the other one was from a Spoon distributor.
When the two long blocks were pull out for a rebuild, the machine shop found that it was the same problem that caused the two engine to burn oil.

speaking with Rand D and talking with spoon, the valve guides are honda OEM, the only part used in the spoon motor which is not OEM is the 2 ply head gasket. They use NEW oem parts, not rebuilt and run tight tolerances on bearings, not loose. I have heard of spoon building race motors, but could not attest to those.

just out of curiosity, how are you guys not selling these like mad? isn't the market value of even a used ITR motor $4k - $5k?

It`s just the longblock, no trans. Plus you`d still need axles, ecu, linkage, etc etc.
T
was the motor built loose to try and get a few more HP? This is kind of common among some engine builders. I think most of you know all about that, so I'm not going to get into it.

bearings, on the other hand, could be debated however...

And even if it was a Problem with the engines build would it be right to say "NEVER BUY ONE THEY SUCK"?
NO!! It would be like buying a Sony TV and a 6-7 months later the picture tube blows, Do you Go Around saying "ALL SONY TV's SUCK, DON'T BUY THEM"
nobody builds motors with "loose" tolerances on the seals...thats we-todd-did. Blow by, and increased leakdown percentages are all that you would gain.

....and then you'll no longer be STX legal...

Come on, Tran. You know you have a thing for "loose seals." ARK, ARK, ARK...see you at Race Wars!!!!
Block "code" better rhyme with "FART" too....PSSSSSSSshhhh
