oooh i'm scared. my lugnut won't come off!
okay so here's the story..i'm trying to remove my rear wheels. one of the lugnuts is stuck, when i look at the lugnut i can see all the metal shavings that the stud was stripping off of it and vice versa. i'm scared that if i put any more force on wrench i'm going to snap the stud. any suggestions to go about getting it off cleanly?...or should i just use force and hopefully i'll get lucky and it will come off okay..how much does it cost to replace the stud if i snap it? any help is appreciated thanks..
Spray some PB blaster onto the lug and let it sit for a while. Try to remove the lugnut and don't be afraid to use to use some force. Next time, put some anti-seize on your studs and you wont have this problem.
thanks...think i'll try it
i don't think they seized or anything, because i installed some coilovers just last week and i was able to get them off and back on no problem. i think i crossthreaded them or screwed up somewhere. thanks for the suggestion.

here's another method to simplify things. go to Home Depot or whatever local hardware store you have. buy a cheap butane blow torch that costs less than $15 that includes the butane. heat it up (don't worry, nothing is going to explode or warp) and spray WD-40 on it...this also works on any other thing such as axle nuts...just make sure it's not around flammable liquids and GAS!!!! good luck!!!
worst that can happen, replace your stud you stud!!!

People PB Blaster is not going to help if the thing is stripped. Take off the other 3 lugs, (completely) and then tilt the wheel/rim, so that you have pressure pushing on the lugnut. (like to pop it off) While doing this, unscrew it and continue to put pressure onto it. The lug will unscrew, even if it is stripped.
Those shavings are due to 1 of two things-
a you stripped the thread
b you used the wrong lugnou on an aluminum rim.

same thing happend to my rear stug/lug...... it has to be like cut off and taken out.... but other than it just being a pain, its not a big deal, i still have to go get another stud put on..... dont worry... you're not alone...
I suggest hand-tightening your lugs next time. Probably overtorqued it.
you can always wd-40 the lug to death

yeah, the guys at the tire shop cross threaded TWO of my rear studs. I ended up snapping them off. It only cost me .99 cent each for new ones. They were a PITA to put back in.
just an update. i bought some pb blaster and used it on the lugnut. maybe it had a placebo effect, but i was able to get the lugnut off. however, the stud is all chewed up at the end..might as well replace that one..
at any rate, pb blaster
