Ok right now I have a crappy d16y7 engine, crappy, very. I am hoping to make this meek engine something worth value by butchering it and adding a ported and polished manifold with a new throttle body. I am also adding racing pulleys and swapping a y8 vtec head on. If I wanted to replace the pistons with type r pistons could I do that with the head off? Also, I am going to add a tru-time cam but I dont know how to adjust it, so you gotta help me on that. Anyway, after all is said and done what do you think this would run as far as hp/torque?
Thanks

This is a great site for allmotor d series stuff, just search around.

Here is about all you need to know regarding our motors. Read this if you are serious about making some power on a d series. I would guess maybe you could get around 160-170 at the wheels with a really high compression, port/polish, aggressive cam type set-up. Anyways, the Type R pistons won't work, but look into the d16a1 pistons out of the 88-89 Acura Integras. You are on track with the y8 head though. Good luck, and welcome to Honda-Tech!

Thanks for the advice. I found a pretty good turbo opportunity so I think I am going to turbo the stock engine and just replace the head with a vtec one and an aggressive cam. I am also upgrading the injectors and adding Safc and a fuel pump. How do you think that will fair?
Thanks for the welcoming

Sorry, I thought you were looking for more of an all-motor build up. But the set-up you mentioned sounds pretty good, you may want to keep the boost around 6-8psi, anything over than that and you may want to consider purchasing a stand alone engine management unit like Hondata, or building up your pistons and rods. The fueling sounds sufficient, the only thing I may do is pick up a Fuel Management Unit from Vortech that actually raises fuel pressure relative to boost. Also, here is another cool site, don't know if you have seen it yet, but it has some great info on custom turbo setups, especially for SOHC motors.

whatever you do don't get tru-time cam gears. I have heard way too many horror stories about AEM cam gears slipping. I assume it is due to the three bolt design. Get skunk2's they have a 6bolt design. I've never had mine slip. As far as making a SOHC fast. I am going to borrow a nitrous kit off my one friend and run the line directly into my d15b2 intake on my '90dx. I'm not going to use any jets either. Just straight nitrous line. I'll let you know how long it last. I'm ording a B16 to tide me over for this summer, until I get the B20 done. I don't want to sound cocky, but I really wouldn't waste the time with the SOHC stuff. Just my$.02
