Keeps the distance between the rocker (which pushes the valve) and the valve within specifications. If this distance is not correct, it could cause premature wear, lost performance, and valve tapping can be heard.
Performance gains can be realized with valve adjustment, especially on VTEC cars, but only if your valves need to be adjusted. You should have it done at every major maintenance interval to keep peak performance.
I just adjusted my valves on my B16 Crx because they were noisy. I had the snap on tool and sure I did it correctly but they are still noisy at startup and when its cold. I thought they would have been loose. But they were all tight when I had to adjust them. Is something maybe broken or loose???
I believe every 15k is recommended. If you're in vtec often, you might want to do it a sooner...
also...valve adjustments make the motor sound more in sync. The clearances can be within spec, but the valves may not be at the same specs..making the motor sound a little "off", although it is running normally.
just keep up with the maintenence as described in the manual..

I'm going to try and attempt my first valve adjustment and it seems relatively straight forward.
I was reading up on a Haynes maual (I know, it's not as good as a Helms), to tighten the locknuts, it says that a "special tool" is required. What's this "special tool" and where can I pick one up?
Are there any other tips?
Thanks.

You can buy a valve adjustment tool from Snap-on or buy one from the dealer. From what I have heard, the tool makes the job easier, but its not a must device to have to do the job.

I think its this one...
http://buy.snapon.com/catalog/pro_de...e=snapon-store
Tool, Metric, Valve Adjustment (for cars with 12 mm jam nut valve screws)
Stock YA8895
$45.50
I can double check the part number when I get home.
Also, its weird how it says its for a 12mm jam nut when the GSR is a 10mm nut. The tool I bought was for a 10mm nut.

You should think of the valve adjustment as maintainence rather than a performance modification because thats what it really is. Since you have so few miles on your car I would not worry about it, but you should pick up a pamphlet from your local acura dealer or look in your manual that came with the car and it will tell you exactly what should be done and what will be done at a particular mileage.
I would suggest that if you do not have any experience with engine work that you take it to the dealer and just have them do it. I wouldnt worry about it too much because when you take it in for your recquired maintainence schedule it will be done along with the oil change...etc

I just double checked my receipt from Snap-on and the YA8895 is the part you want for valve adjustment on the GSR.
If you have a non-VTEC motor, you do not need any special tool for a valve adjustment. The valve point outward on the non-VTEC motor.

Valve adjustment is recommended every 30000, but I find 15000 is more a true figure.... In fact, my engine is tap dancing right now....too much hard driving....
The tool is called a Feeler Gauge.
It's really easy, i'v never done it on a DOHC so i'm not sure if it's more difficult.. I was thinking about doing mine, but I'm a little hesitant doing it on a DOHC..
when your testing the valve clearance with the feeler gauge you will want just enough stress when you place the feeler gauge in between the valve and rocker

The part I am talking about is when you need to adjust the valve then tighten the lock nut. On the GSR motor, the oil squirters get in the way a bit when trying to adust the valve and then lock the nut down.
You can see in this pic (thanks to c-speedracing.com) how the oil squirters get in the way:

And, a DOHC is pretty much the same as a SOHC. You just have two rows of valves to adjust versus 1 row.
