Exhaust back pressure! Opinions needed!
Hello, I got an 88 CRX Si with a CRVTec swap, Arias (11.6 or 12.0 - donno which) pistons and Eagle forged rods. Short ram intake and DC 4-2-1 ceramic. That's about it for speed-mods. Oh and Clutchmasters Stage IV and matching 7.5lb flywheel but that doesn't matter for my question.
I want to know what my best exhaust set-up will be? I think I am being robber of lots of HP in the top end, particularily from 7-8K.
I was thinking the following:
1. Test-pipe instead of catalytic converter (cheaper then hi-flow cat)
2. Straight exhaust going out on right side of car (means cutting a hole in bumper for muffler (MagnaFlow) to fit)
That would remove pretty much all back pressure. My stock exhaust has 2 bends in it, after the rear axle.
What do you think? Also, what size exhaust should I go for?
This car is primarily a track car (Solo 1) but will see many days @ the strip as well.

i'm not sure what you mean by "out the side" but it sounds like a good setup for your motor...i would go at least 2 1/4" if not 2.5", i have 2.5" mandrel bent on my car, it was a little tough to make it work(we welded it ourselves), but it works flawlessly now......definilty worth the effort
all i have to say is that **** is gunna be loud! i have a buddy that has a mpfi swap done to his rex and he has a side outlet exhaust with a resonator on it with hi flow cat and that thing is just wow loud as hell, i here him coming from blocks away!
edit:sorry no tech stuff in my first original post, i would probably do a 2.5" exhaust, it will keep the velocity of the exhaust going so that way u dont loose the pressure from goin to large

Thanx for the replies. I think I wasn't clear enough though and you guys misunderstood me.
You know how the stock exhaust comes out the rear-left side of the bumper? Well that I meant by the right side, was for the exhaust to come out on the rear-right side of the bumper. Basically a straight straight pipe all the way from the header, up until its point of release out the back bumper.
So you guys think 2.5" would be better then 2.25" ?

i wouldnt do any bigger than 2.5, you will lose velocity in the exhaust.
a straight pipe on an mpfi swap will be loud as ****. my **** w/ resinator and muffler w/o cat is too loud as it is.
all i know is i dont have a built motor or anything
but i have a crx with a b16a and itr cams
i scored a jdm integra 97 spec header, its a 4-2-1 but it has a huge 2 1/2 inc collector, all the welds are on the outside, this header is badass, right now im running it open, there is no backpressure, from 1-4 it feels a little slower but from 4500-8200 that bitch pulls soo hard, its so loud my ears popped yesterday
i have 2 1/2 inch piping, hiflow cat, and a magnaflow stainless steel muffler on its way. i think the cat and muffler will add enough backpressure where i wont be losing any power.
