Default 225 vs 205

In a S1, lapping or RR environment how much do you think drag has a impact when comparing 205/60/13 on a 6"or 7” rim vs. 225/45ZR-13 on a 8 or 9" rim with Hoosier R3S03's. Also the gearing with the 205’s is ***, so the 225’s will win hands down there. The car is an 87 CRX making around 100hp to the wheels. Will I get more outta the corners then what I’ll loose in the straights?? That is the question

If you think 225’s are faster then what rim will best accommodate the extra rubber?
Would the 8” or 9” be a better rim for the higher speed stuff? 8.5? What’s the best rim size??

Lee G, any advice for this car? What do the other “experts” think.

BTW, this is my first new thread on the board, been browsing for about a week or so. Good to meet you gents………..

to further throw a wrench into things i should point out that i would be using 205 Hankook's on the rear. 27mm bars up front and 450 rear springs. So the extra drag of the tires would only be on the front.

Also, does anybody have any expirence with 235/50/13(or is it 235/45/13) Kumho's and what rims works best with them? Same 8 or 9 as the hoosiers?

225's on a wider wheel will win out every time. Run 225's all the way around so you can rotate tires for better wear if possible.

circleracing makes nice wheels.

a lot of the fast guys run 13 x 8's on their crx's down here...

hmmm,
$187.20usd
9.30 pounds
Thanks for the link. I wonder if i would get enough brake cooling with those?

.RJ,
yeah i'd like to run the wider wheels and tires all around but its not a realistic option for me at the moment(read $$$$$). I get the Hankook from friends of mine that use them for FF1600 so i need to burn them up. I can afford to run expensive tires and rims on the front only. Actually i've heard from a CSP CRX driver that they got higher skidpad numbers when running 225's all around vs. stagering like i run, but you never know if some setup "alterations" can make a stagard setup work just as well. I should really do some testing...... However, i like the handeling charactistics of smaller wheels on the rear. nice and pointy........

chet,
Are the people using those rims running in SOLO, RR?? I've heard with the Spun stainless rim you need to run some type of wheel space to prevent the studs from being sheered off. This was on a Diamond Racing rim. Does anbody have any expirence here? I'm not sure i really believe that but whatever, caution is a good thing.

PS, please keep in mind that i'm only getting 100hp at the ground so drag is a BIG factor............ Hell, i pick a few km's with a good backwind....

Krispy,

Welcome.

I've been there and done that.

1. The 225/50/13 or 225/45/13 Hoosier is a damn fine tire for MOST tracks. The tracks that are medium-high speed: VIR, CMP, Summit, Pocono, W-glen the 225's worked fine. The track that was stupid warp-speed fast 'Lowes', the 225's cost me big time top end. Major-drag. I would run smaller tires there next time.

2. No way in heck your going to legal in regard to 'tires under the fenders' with a 8 or 9 inch wheel for Road Racing (SCCA or NASA rules). CSP thats another can of worms. Go with a good 13x7 Panasport, spend the money right the first time.

3. If I were still racing the old car with 13", I would have both a 205/60/13 and the standard 225/50/13 mounted and ready at all times. But, thats just me.

Good Luck and bring her down to some H-C events.

John

If money it tight now, just run the used hankook tires at all four corners. That beats killing two hoosiers for a lapping day.

Thanks John.

1. I'm not sure i plain on doing any SCCA or NASA events with this car so the fender lip rule won't really apply(live in ontario canada). (my engine is P&P so its no longer CSP legal, I don't really want to put a full cage in it so that rules out RR) I have 2 years in University left before i have any real money so i'm a little restricted in what i do & events i run. But i would love to run some Spec miata in NE divison.

Another question, will the 225 Hoosiers or 235 Kumho's work well on a 13x7" rim?? Its not optimal but i wonder how much REAL time is lost with being a inch shy in rim diameter.

PS, the tracks we run on are pretty low speed, fastes recorded striaght speed(with radar gun) was 153kph, for reference the ITR's hi low 170's and Z06's hit low 190's...............ZO6 OWNZZ

smokin rubber,
You krazy!!! Ofcourse i wouldn't use the Hoosiers for lapping days. Actually i run very few lapping days unless i have something in the car i wanna test. Driver seat time is not a issue for me with this car, i'm getting pretty much all i can get outta her.
