Default seatbelt doesn't reel back in?

anyone know how to fix this... I have to manually feed the seatbelt into the little thingy so it will roll up the seatbelt so I can close my door and stuff ... it's such a hassel doing this all the time

sorry for not really being clear, I don't know how to explain it

I know exactly what you mean. It sux.

I've never know anyone successfully being able to rebuild the mechanism before. Best bet is to get a new or used replacement.

I thought there was a law that the warranty for seatbelts is much longer than 4 years (maybe 10). So the dealer may be requierd to replace the assembly or at least fix it.

My car (the civic) got really bad, and it was really sudded too! I never really had a problem until one random day... do you think it would work to swap the parts from the rear seat belts? No one ever rides back there anyways.

This usually takes care of it.

From Service Bulletin #91-030:

SYMPTOM
The seat belt will not retract all the way, or retracts slowly.

PROBABLE CAUSE
Dirt on the seat belt webbing and guide.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Clean the seat belts and guides with a mild soap solution or isopropyl alcohol. This procedure applies only to three-point (active and passive) seat belts. Do not use it for motorized seat belt systems.

yup, that should fix you up.

I've never had to use soap/alcohol before though. Usually you can just extend the belt all the way out and blow it off with an air compressor, or canned air if you don't have access to a compressor.

ok so I can go up to the dealership and have this done? I will try the compressed air first - but if that doesn't work, the dealership will have to do it for me? someone is saying 10 years... my car is 13 years old (90)

my car is a 93. I had to do this back in around 2001. my driver seat belt would not retract, therefore making it pointless.

i brought it to the dealership. the guy took me in right away. "oh man, thats no joke, well get you in right this second. we act fast on safety issues".

about an hour and half later, new seatbelt, free of charge. and its not like i bought the car there either. it was like a blind walk in.

your car could be a 1977 civic, and they will replace the seatbelts free of charge.

I'd love to know what dealer you went to.

My local dealer said:

"Leave the car overnight, we'll take a look at the mechanism in the morning and if it's at fault, we'll order a new one from CALIFORNIA!"

I said: "There are none here on the East Coast?"

They said: "I doubt that very much, as your car is 11 years old."

I said "Why can't you just verify the problem now, order the retractors, and give me a call when they come in?"

They said: "It don't work that way, you've got to leave the car untill it's repaired, we cannot release it untill it's repaired due to liability."

I also have a friend who works in a different dealership and he can't get me the retractors without HONDA doing the replacement. (Leaving the car for who knows how long)

I've just gotten used to it.

so what about the motorized ones? I've noticed that I have a fuse for the seatbelts. What do you do for those, aside from taking it to the dealership?

My seatbelt did the same thing. The cause of this is oils from the hands getting on the seatbelt and thempicking up dust and dirt them being left on the seatbelt anchor at the pillar. The fix is easy get some velcro, about 6 inches of it. Now there are two parts to the velcro, you will be using the rough part. Insert the velcro into the anchor at pillar between seatbelt and anchor, rough part facing the plastic part of anchor and pull the velcro back and forth in a sanding motion, this should fix your problem. depending on the amount of build up some alcohal may make the job easier
