after watching the intensely sweet first race of the 2003 F1 season, after a certain driver crashed (trying not to spoil anything here
), his wheel stayed near the car by use of a wheel tether. a friend asked me the simple but good question of "where does the tether attach, i don't see them fiddling with it during pit stops?"
i had no answer for this.........do any of you?

I saw that too. It probably goes from the car's body to the wheel hub. It's not like the wheel is going to unscrew from the hub in a crash. Suspension arms are what breaks, right?
That's right - where they are used, tethers attach to the upright (the part at the end of the suspension arms), not the wheel itself. The problem is not the wheel coming off of the suspension, it is the entire suspension corner getting torn off of the car.
